Premodern Sligh Deck Guide (2026)
How to play Premodern Sligh: a lean mono-red aggro-burn deck that curves out with efficient creatures and points every other card at your opponent's life total. This guide covers the game plan, mulligan decisions, sequencing, every major matchup and a full sideboard plan.
How the deck wins
- Sligh is the original curve deck: a land every turn and a one-drop into a two-drop into a three-drop, while burn clears blockers or goes to the face. The clock is fast and the reach is long.
- Unlike Goblins, the plan is raw damage, not synergy. Creatures supply the early beats, then Lightning Bolt, Fireblast and Price of Progress close the game from a life total that looked safe a turn ago.
- Cursed Scroll and Grim Lavamancer are the grind plan: once the creatures are spent they turn spare lands and an empty hand into repeatable damage, so Sligh rarely runs dry against removal-heavy decks.
Core cards
- 4 Jackal Pup
- 4 Mogg Fanatic
- 3 Grim Lavamancer
- 4 Ball Lightning
- 4 Lightning Bolt
- 4 Incinerate
- 4 Fireblast
- 3 Cursed Scroll
- 4 Wasteland
- 15 Mountain
Key cards
- Jackal Pup: Classic turn-one beater: a 2/1 for one mana that starts the clock immediately. The small drawback (it takes the same damage it is dealt) almost never matters in a race.
- Grim Lavamancer: Repeatable reach and card advantage: pay R and tap to deal 2, fuelled by your graveyard. The best card against removal decks and in the mirror.
- Slith Firewalker: Snowballing threat: a first-striking 1/1 for R that grows every time it connects. Left unanswered for a turn or two it ends the game by itself.
- Ball Lightning: Six trample damage out of nowhere for three mana. Often the burst that turns a stalled board into a lethal turn, especially behind burn for the blocker.
- Cursed Scroll: Late-game engine: once your hand is empty it deals 2 to anything every turn. Your best source of inevitability and reach against control and midrange.
- Fireblast: Free finisher: sacrifice two Mountains to deal 4 at no mana cost. The card that steals games from a seemingly safe life total, best held for the kill.
- Price of Progress: Two damage for every nonbasic land the opponent controls: often six to eight damage from one card against dual-land decks like Landstill and The Rock.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or three lands plus an early play and a piece of reach: a one or two drop with burn behind it.
- Hands with Cursed Scroll or Grim Lavamancer plus lands, even if the start is slower: they grind out almost anyone.
- Fast all-creature hands with a follow-up, against decks you have to race.
Ship
- No-land and one-land hands: the curve only works with a land every turn.
- All-land or all-burn hands with no creatures to start the clock.
- Slow, reactive hands with no turn-one or turn-two play.
Sligh is a damage-math deck, not a value deck: keep hands that present a clock now, not hands that hope to draw into one. Counting to lethal starts in the mulligan.
Play tips and sequencing
- Deploy creatures on curve before you burn: spend early mana on bodies and save burn for blockers or the final points.
- Do the math every turn and sequence burn so Fireblast and Lightning Bolt finish from range, rather than trading them for a creature the opponent would have chumped anyway.
- Race lifegain: commit before The Rock or Enchantress stabilizes, and lead on Sulfuric Vortex when you have it.
- Empty your hand on purpose to switch on Cursed Scroll, then use it as a repeatable burn source while you draw more gas.
- Save Grim Lavamancer and Barbarian Ring for the last two points from an empty board: they are your reach once the creatures are gone.
Matchups
- Goblins (even): The faster, more synergistic red deck out-grinds you with Goblin Ringleader. Race, and spend burn on their lords and Piledriver rather than going to the face.
- Stiflenought (even to unfavorable): Free counters protect the combo and a 12/12 you cannot burn races you back. Curve out fast, hold burn for their tempo creatures, and bring blasts plus Pyrostatic Pillar after board.
- Landstill (favorable): Price of Progress punishes their dual lands and Cursed Scroll out-grinds one-for-one removal. Do not overextend into Wrath of God.
- Mono Black (even to favorable): Race the discard and removal; their lifegain is thin. Sulfuric Vortex shuts off Corrupt and lifelink after board.
- The Rock (unfavorable): Removal plus lifegain (Spiritmonger, fetch and painland life) blunts the clock. Keep burn for the face and bring Sulfuric Vortex after board.
- Replenish (even): A pure race: pressure their slow setup and close before Opalescence plus Parallax Wave stabilizes. Pyrostatic Pillar and Sulfuric Vortex swing it after board.
- Enchantress (unfavorable): They gain life and lock the board with Solitary Confinement and Parallax Wave. You must win before the lock; Sulfuric Vortex and Pyrostatic Pillar are essential after board.
Sideboard guide
- vs Control and Landstill: Sulfuric Vortex, Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Pillage. Add inevitability with Vortex and answer counters and key blue permanents with blasts; Pillage strains a greedy manabase.
- vs The Rock and lifegain: Sulfuric Vortex. Vortex switches off their lifegain and adds two damage a turn of reach, the single most important card in the matchup.
- vs Enchantress: Pyrostatic Pillar, Sulfuric Vortex. Pillar taxes their cheap enchantments; race before Solitary Confinement and the Parallax lock come online.
- vs Replenish and combo: Pyrostatic Pillar, Pyroblast, Sulfuric Vortex. Tax the engine and close fast: they stumble badly under early pressure.
- vs Goblins and creature aggro: Pyrokinesis, Firebolt. Free removal with Pyrokinesis wins the race; trade efficiently and keep burn for their lords.
- vs Stiflenought and blue tempo: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Pyrostatic Pillar. Blasts answer Stifle and counters; you cannot burn the 12/12, so race and tax before it lands.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $130–$300. One of the cheapest competitive Premodern decks: mostly commons and uncommons on basic Mountains.
- Start with an all-Mountain core of commons (Jackal Pup, Mogg Fanatic, Ball Lightning, Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Fireblast, Price of Progress): competitive for very little.
- Add Cursed Scroll, the deck's one real money card and its best source of late-game reach.
- Add Grim Lavamancer for repeatable damage and card advantage against removal decks.
- Slot Barbarian Ring as a near-free utility-land upgrade for the last two points.
- Build the sideboard last: Sulfuric Vortex, Pyroblast and Pyrostatic Pillar cover the hardest matchups.
