Premodern Fluctuator Deck Guide (2026)
Premodern Fluctuator is a combo deck that cycles 52 cards for free and turns a graveyard full of blue creatures into one lethal spell. Fluctuator makes every cycle cost nothing, Songs of the Damned turns each creature card in your graveyard into a black mana, and Haunting Misery or Drain Life turns that mana and those cards into damage, as early as turn three. It is a fringe deck: mtgtop8 lists 20 Fluctuator decks since 2024, ten of them in 2026, and MTGDecks has only two recorded matches, so every rating in this guide comes from card analysis, not match data. The reference list is Lorenzo Lombardo's, second of 27 at the Lega Spartana II tappa in Cecina, Italy, on June 12, 2026, and four of the eight 2026 lists we checked play the identical 60 cards. This guide covers the plan, the key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup, sideboard plans and a budget path.
How the deck wins
- Fluctuator on turn two. Play a cycling land that enters tapped on turn one and Blasted Landscape, the only one that enters untapped, on turn two, then cast Fluctuator. From now on every cycle costs nothing.
- Cycle on the kill turn. With Polluted Mire or Dromar's Cavern ready, cycle creatures and lands into the graveyard until you hold the kill spell and have enough creature cards there. The eight cards that cannot cycle stay in your hand while everything else turns over.
- Songs, then the kill. Tap one black source for Songs of the Damned and spend its mana on Haunting Misery (N damage, so 20 creature cards for 20 life), Drain Life (N minus 2, so 22) or both (2N minus 5, so 13). Without Songs, Haunting Misery alone from three lands, two of them black, still deals N. Always cast Songs first: Misery exiles the creature cards that Songs counts.

Key cards
- Fluctuator: Two mana, a colorless artifact: cycling abilities you activate cost {2} less, and every cycling card here costs {2}, so cycling becomes free. Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast cannot hit it, and Null Rod does not stop it, since its ability is static, but Disenchant, Seal of Cleansing, Naturalize, Vindicate, Powder Keg on two counters and Chain of Vapor all answer it. Four copies, because only about 40 percent of opening hands hold one.
- Songs of the Damned: One mana, an instant: add {B} for each creature card in your graveyard, counted when it resolves. Tormod's Crypt or Withered Wretch in response shrinks it, so deal with the Crypt first (Gilded Light gives you shroud against it). Its mana empties at the end of the phase, so cast it in the same main phase as the kill spell.
- Haunting Misery: Three mana, a sorcery: as an additional cost, exile X creature cards from your graveyard, then deal X damage to target player. The exile is a cost, so graveyard hate in response does nothing once Misery is cast. Paid with Songs of the Damned, it deals one damage per creature card; Solitary Confinement (shroud plus damage prevention) and Glacial Chasm (damage prevention) are the cards that stop it cold.
- Drain Life: The second kill: X damage to any target, and X can be paid only with black mana, which Songs of the Damned provides. Alone after Songs it deals N minus 2; after Haunting Misery has used three of the mana, N minus 5 more. It also kills a creature in a pinch.
- Blasted Landscape: The only cycling land that enters untapped. Played on turn two after a tapped land, it pays for a turn-two Fluctuator; it taps for colorless mana only.
- Polluted Mire: The black source for Songs of the Damned, with Dromar's Cavern the only land that makes {B}. It enters tapped, so play it at least one turn before the kill, and keep a second one in hand when the opponent has Wasteland or Rishadan Port.
- Dromar's Cavern: Taps for {W}, {U} or {B} and does not enter tapped, but you must return a non-Lair land you control to your hand: tap that land for mana first, and return a cycling land, which you can cycle again. It is the only land in the deck that cannot cycle.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Fluctuator with two or three lands, one of them Blasted Landscape: Fluctuator on turn two.
- Fluctuator with Polluted Mire or Dromar's Cavern among the lands: the black mana for Songs of the Damned is already there.
- Many lands are fine: every land except Dromar's Cavern cycles, so a five-land hand stops being flooded once Fluctuator is out.
Ship
- No land or one land: most of your lands enter tapped, and the deck cannot afford to stumble.
- Hands without Fluctuator and with fewer than three lands: without it every cycle costs {2}, so two lands buy one new card a turn. This is an estimate from the card costs, not a tested rule.
Only about 40 percent of opening hands contain one of the four Fluctuators. Without one, cycle lands and creatures for {2} each to dig for it.
Play tips and sequencing
- Tapped lands first. Play the cycling lands that enter tapped on turns one and two, and keep Blasted Landscape for the turn you cast Fluctuator.
- Black source a turn early. Play Polluted Mire one turn before the kill. Dromar's Cavern enters untapped but returns a non-Lair land you control to your hand: tap that land for mana first, then return a cycling land you can cycle again.
- Cycle on the kill turn, not before. A graveyard full of creatures is a target for Tormod's Crypt, Phyrexian Furnace and Withered Wretch, which several decks in the format play.
- Watch your library. Every cycle draws a card, and drawing from an empty library loses the game, so stop before it runs out.
- Cycling is not a spell. Counterspell, Mana Leak and Daze cannot stop it, and Standstill does not trigger. Stifle can counter a single cycle, but the card was discarded as the cost: the creature still lands in your graveyard, you only lose the draw.
- Songs first, then the kill spell, in one main phase. If the opponent has Tormod's Crypt on the battlefield, cast Gilded Light before you start cycling: in response the Crypt can only exile a near-empty graveyard, and afterward it cannot target you that turn.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (unfavorable): Counterspell, Foil and Daze stop Fluctuator, Songs of the Damned and Haunting Misery, while Stifle stops only one cycle: the discarded card still reaches your graveyard. Powder Keg on two counters destroys Fluctuator, Chain of Vapor bounces it, and Vision Charm phases it out for the turn. After boarding, bring Misdirection, which can redirect a Counterspell onto Misdirection itself, and Miscalculation, and cast Fluctuator when they are tapped out. No match data.
- Sligh (even): A race: your kill on turn three or four against their burn, and Sligh has no counters. Price of Progress, which they bring against nonbasic mana bases, deals two damage for each nonbasic land you control, and all of your lands are nonbasic. Gilded Light gives you shroud, so burn cannot target you that turn, Misdirection redirects a Lightning Bolt, and Tormod's Crypt or Overload may come in after boarding. No match data.
- Goblins (even): Goblins is fast but has no counters, and its main-deck answers to Fluctuator are two Naturalize and Goblin Tinkerer. All your lands are nonbasic: Wasteland and Rishadan Port can take or tap your only black source, so hold a second one when you can. Expunge kills a Goblin, and Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast miss a colorless Fluctuator; after boarding, expect Overload and Tormod's Crypt. No match data.
- Enchantress (unfavorable): Solitary Confinement gives its controller shroud and prevents all damage to them: Haunting Misery and Drain Life cannot target them, and no other kill gets through. Seal of Cleansing destroys Fluctuator, and Sterling Grove gives their other enchantments shroud. The reference sideboard has no answer to Confinement; Abe Finch's list has two Clear, which cannot target it while Sterling Grove is on the battlefield. No match data.
- Terrageddon (even): Terrageddon has no counters, but its main-deck Naturalize and Disenchant destroy Fluctuator, Wasteland and Rishadan Port go after your black sources, and every land you cycle grows Terravore, which counts land cards in all graveyards. Armageddon does not stop the cycling once Fluctuator is out, but Songs of the Damned still needs one black mana. Keep a Polluted Mire for the kill turn and race; Aura of Silence and Tormod's Crypt may come in after boarding. No match data.
- Replenish (even): Both decks are combo, but Replenish interacts: Abeyance stops your cycling, Songs of the Damned and the kill spells for a turn, Seal of Cleansing destroys Fluctuator, and a Decree of Silence returned by Replenish counters your next three spells. Gilded Light in response to Abeyance makes it lose its only target, and Misdirection can redirect it to them. Kill before Replenish resolves, or on the turn they tap out. No match data.
- Landstill (unfavorable): Counterspell and Mana Leak answer Fluctuator and the kill spells, not the cycling. Standstill never triggers from cycling, only from a spell such as Fluctuator, Songs of the Damned or the kill spell, and they draw their three cards before your spell resolves. Disenchant, Powder Keg and the main-deck Phyrexian Furnace are there too, and Tormod's Crypt comes in after boarding; cast Fluctuator when they tap out and bring Misdirection, Miscalculation and Gilded Light. No match data.
- Oath of Druids (slightly unfavorable): Oath of Druids lives on land destruction: Wasteland and Rishadan Port hit your lands, which are all nonbasic, Thermokarst and Winter's Grasp destroy any land, and Sphere of Resistance makes Fluctuator cost {3} and Songs of the Damned {1}{B}. Cycling is an ability, so Sphere does not tax it, but every land you cycle grows their Terravore. They have no counters, so a fast Fluctuator and a protected black source win; Naturalize, Aura of Silence and Tormod's Crypt may come in after boarding. No match data.
- Full English Breakfast (slightly unfavorable): Full English Breakfast is at least as fast, and four Cabal Therapy name Fluctuator or Songs of the Damned. Neither deck touches the other's graveyard in game one, but Expunge kills Hermit Druid or Birds of Paradise, and Gilded Light stops Therapy for a turn. Do not cast Twilight's Call: it returns their creatures too. No match data.
- Mono Black (unfavorable): Duress and Cabal Therapy take Fluctuator or the one-ofs, and Withered Wretch exiles creature cards from your graveyard for {1} each, also in response to Songs of the Damned. Hypnotic Specter and Ravenous Rats keep stripping your hand, and Wasteland can take your black source. Gilded Light stops Duress and Therapy that turn (they target you), not the Wretch; the second Songs and Twilight's Call make the plan less fragile. No match data.
- Stasis (slightly unfavorable): Counterspell, Daze and Thwart answer Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned, and Chain of Vapor bounces Fluctuator. Stasis itself barely matters once Fluctuator is out: cycling costs nothing, and you need only one untapped black source for Songs, though Ice can tap it in your upkeep. Bring Misdirection and Miscalculation and keep Polluted Mire untapped under the lock. No match data.
- Elves (even): Elves has no counters and no graveyard hate in the main deck, but it can win early with Gaea's Cradle and Deranged Hermit. Nantuko Vigilante, in nine of ten lists, destroys Fluctuator when turned face up, and Survival of the Fittest finds it; Naturalize and Tormod's Crypt are in their sideboard. Expunge kills Priest of Titania or Deranged Hermit, so the race is close. No match data.
- Psychatog (unfavorable): Counterspell and Foil stop Fluctuator, Songs of the Damned and the kill spells, and Duress takes them from your hand. After boarding, Annul counters Fluctuator for one mana and Tormod's Crypt can come in. Their clock is slow, and Expunge cannot kill a black Psychatog, so bring Misdirection, Miscalculation and Gilded Light and cycle on the turn they tap out. No match data.
- UG Madness (slightly unfavorable): UG Madness has a fast clock, and Circular Logic and Daze answer Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned; Circular Logic gets harder to pay as their graveyard fills. After boarding, Annul counters Fluctuator and Tormod's Crypt can come in. Expunge kills Arrogant Wurm or Basking Rootwalla, but Wild Mongrel can turn itself black in response. No match data.
- The Rock (unfavorable): Duress, Cabal Therapy and Ravenous Rats strip Fluctuator and the one-ofs, and Pernicious Deed for two destroys Fluctuator. After boarding, Tormod's Crypt, Withered Wretch and Phyrexian Furnace come in for graveyard decks, and Ravenous Baloth gains them 4 life. Gilded Light stops the discard and Tormod's Crypt for a turn, and the second Songs of the Damned is a spare. No match data.
- Reanimator (unfavorable): Reanimator can put Akroma, Angel of Wrath onto the battlefield on turn one or two, faster than any Fluctuator kill, and four Cabal Therapy name your key cards. Expunge cannot kill Akroma, which has protection from black, and Twilight's Call would return their creatures too. Gilded Light stops Therapy for a turn; you need their reanimation spell to miss. No match data.
- Deadguy Ale (unfavorable): Duress takes Fluctuator and the kill spells, Gerrard's Verdict costs you two cards of your choice, Vindicate and Disenchant destroy Fluctuator, and Withered Wretch exiles creature cards from your graveyard for {1} each. Their clock is slow, but Exalted Angel's life gain moves your kill further away. Bring Gilded Light and the second Songs of the Damned; against Gerrard's Verdict, discard creatures, which feed your graveyard, not lands, which give them 3 life each. No match data.
- Tron (slightly unfavorable): Power Sink, Prohibit and Miscalculation answer Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned; unkicked Prohibit counters only mana value 2 or less, so not Haunting Misery or a big Drain Life. Disenchant, Annul and Tormod's Crypt may come in after boarding. Their clock is slow, so bait the counters and cycle when they are tapped low, with Misdirection and Miscalculation as backup. No match data.
- Clerics (unfavorable): Duress and Cabal Therapy take Fluctuator or the one-ofs, Withered Wretch exiles creature cards from your graveyard for {1} each, and Scion of Darkness can arrive as early as turn two. Expunge cannot kill their black creatures, and Twilight's Call would return their Clerics too. Gilded Light stops the discard for a turn; race with the fastest Fluctuator you can find. No match data.
- The Solution (slightly unfavorable): Meddling Mage naming Fluctuator or Songs of the Damned cripples the combo until it dies, and Counterspell and Mana Leak back it up. Expunge kills Meddling Mage or Lightning Angel, but Exalted Angel's life gain and Lightning Bolt make the race hard. After boarding, expect Annul, Disenchant and Tormod's Crypt, and Red Elemental Blast for your Misdirection. No match data.
- Dromar Control (unfavorable): Duress, Mana Leak and Meddling Mage come at Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned from three sides, and Vindicate destroys Fluctuator. After boarding, Annul, Phyrexian Furnace and Tormod's Crypt can come in. Expunge kills Meddling Mage or Exalted Angel but not the blue-black Shadowmage Infiltrator; bring Gilded Light and Misdirection, since their clock is slow. No match data.
- Aluren (even): Two combo decks with little interaction: Chain of Vapor bounces Fluctuator, and once Aluren resolves, their Spike Feeder or Soul Warden loop gains unlimited life, which beats a damage kill. Kill before Aluren resolves, usually on turn three or four. Miscalculation counters Aluren unless they pay {2}, and Expunge kills Spike Feeder, though not the blue-black Cavern Harpy. No match data.
- Zombies (unfavorable): Zombies is fast, and Withered Wretch exiles creature cards from your graveyard for {1} each, also in response to Songs of the Damned. Duress, Cabal Therapy and Wasteland attack your hand and your black source, and Expunge cannot kill their black creatures. Gilded Light stops the discard and Gempalm Polluter's life loss for a turn; you need a turn-three kill. No match data.
- MUD (even): MUD has no counters, and its lock hurts you less than most decks: once Fluctuator is out, cycling costs nothing under Winter Orb, and the kill needs only one untapped black source for Songs of the Damned. Sphere of Resistance makes Fluctuator and Songs cost one more, and Rishadan Port and Mishra's Helix tap your black source. Expunge cannot kill their artifact creatures, so race Karn, Silver Golem and Triskelion. No match data.
- White Weenie (slightly unfavorable): A fast clock with answers: Disenchant and Seal of Cleansing destroy Fluctuator, and Armageddon after a quick start leaves you without black mana for Songs of the Damned, though Fluctuator keeps cycling free. Exalted Angel gains them life, and Tormod's Crypt and Aura of Silence may come in after boarding. Expunge kills most of their creatures, though not Soltari Monk (protection from black), and you need the kill on turn three or four. No match data.
- BW Control (unfavorable): Duress strips Fluctuator and the kill spells, Gerrard's Verdict makes you discard two cards of your choice, Vindicate destroys Fluctuator, and Dust Bowl hits your lands. Phyrexian Furnace is in the main deck, and Haunting Echoes after boarding exiles your graveyard and every copy of those cards left in your library. Their clock is slow; against Gerrard's Verdict discard creatures, not lands, which gain them 3 life each, and bring Gilded Light. No match data.
- Gro-a-Tog (unfavorable): Counterspell, Foil and Meddling Mage stop Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned, and Quirion Dryad grows into a fast clock with every cantrip. Expunge kills Quirion Dryad or Meddling Mage but not Psychatog, which is black. After boarding they may bring Annul, Disenchant and Duress; bring Misdirection and Miscalculation. No match data.
- Pit Rack (unfavorable): Duress, Funeral Charm, Cabal Therapy, Ravenous Rats and Hypnotic Specter empty your hand before Fluctuator matters, though Bottomless Pit's random discard feeds your graveyard when it hits a creature. Cycling does not change your hand size, so The Rack keeps hurting. After boarding, Planar Void exiles every card as it reaches a graveyard, which shuts the kill off, and Tormod's Crypt comes in; Gilded Light stops the targeted discard for a turn. No match data.
- Rebels (slightly unfavorable): Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned, and Standstill does not trigger from cycling, only from your spells. Their clock is slow and Expunge kills any Rebel except Nightwind Glider (protection from black); after boarding, Annul, Aura of Silence, Seal of Cleansing and Tormod's Crypt may come in, while Null Rod does nothing, since Fluctuator's ability is not activated. Bait the counters and cycle when they are tapped low. No match data.
- Contamination (slightly unfavorable): Contamination helps you: every land taps for black, so Songs of the Damned and Haunting Misery are easy to cast. The rest of their deck hurts: Duress and Cabal Therapy take Fluctuator, Powder Keg on two counters destroys it, Wasteland and Rishadan Port hit your lands, and Phyrexian Furnace, Tormod's Crypt and Haunting Echoes go after your graveyard. Null Rod from their sideboard does not stop Fluctuator, whose ability is not activated. No match data.
- Turbo Lands (slightly unfavorable): Glacial Chasm prevents all damage to them, and Crop Rotation puts it onto the battlefield at instant speed, even in response to Haunting Misery or Drain Life. Wasteland, Rishadan Port and Dust Bowl hit your nonbasic lands, and Seal of Cleansing destroys Fluctuator. Miscalculation can counter Crop Rotation unless they pay {2}; otherwise wait until the Chasm's rising life cost makes them give it up. No match data.
- RG Zoo (slightly unfavorable): A race against a fast creature deck that plays main-deck Naturalize, two in most lists, for Fluctuator, so keep a second copy when you can. After boarding expect Tormod's Crypt, which shrinks Songs of the Damned in response, and bring Gilded Light, which gives you shroud for a turn, so neither their burn nor Tormod's Crypt can target you, and Expunge for Quirion Dryad or an Elephant token. No match data.
Sideboard guide
- vs Stiflenought, Landstill, Psychatog, Stasis, Tron and Rebels: Misdirection, Miscalculation. Misdirection is free by exiling a blue card from your hand, and 28 of your creatures are blue. It changes the target of a spell with a single target, also onto Misdirection itself, which makes a Counterspell or Mana Leak lose its target; it cannot do that to Annul, since Misdirection is not an artifact or enchantment spell. Miscalculation counters a spell unless its controller pays {2}, and cycles for free with Fluctuator when you do not need it.
- vs Mono Black, The Rock, Deadguy Ale, BW Control, Clerics and Pit Rack: Gilded Light. You gain shroud until end of turn: Duress, Cabal Therapy, Gerrard's Verdict, Funeral Charm, Tormod's Crypt and burn aimed at you need you as a target and cannot be used against you that turn. Cards that target a card in your graveyard, such as Withered Wretch, still work, and so does random discard from Hypnotic Specter or Bottomless Pit. It cycles for free when you do not need it.
- vs Goblins, Elves, White Weenie, UG Madness and Rebels: Expunge. Destroys a nonartifact, nonblack creature for {2}{B}, or cycles for free. It does not kill Phyrexian Dreadnought, Masticore or Karn, Silver Golem (artifacts), Psychatog or the creatures of Mono Black, Zombies and Clerics (black), and Wild Mongrel can turn itself black in response.
- vs Mono Black, Pit Rack, Contamination and other discard decks: Songs of the Damned, Twilight's Call. The second Songs makes the kill less fragile against discard. Twilight's Call ({4}{B}{B}, or {2} more at instant speed) returns all creature cards from every graveyard to the battlefield, so after a cycling turn it turns your graveyard into an army of fliers when the kill spells are gone. It returns the opponent's creatures too, so never cast it against Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Zombies or Clerics, and Drifting Djinn needs {1}{U} in each upkeep to stay.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $60–$260. The reference 75 costs about $261 at the printings tracked on this site (September 30, 2026). The main deck alone is about $52: four Fluctuator about $25, Songs of the Damned about $3, everything else under $2 a copy. The four Misdirection in the sideboard are about $200 of the total.
- Buy the main deck first, about $52.
- Add the cheap sideboard cards: Miscalculation, Expunge, Gilded Light, Twilight's Call and the second Songs of the Damned, together about $10.
- Misdirection last. Without it the cards cost about $60, with four sideboard slots still open.
