Premodern archetypes that play Grim Lavamancer
- Sligh: A one-mana 1/1 that deals 2 damage to any target for {R}, a tap and two cards exiled from your graveyard. Fetchlands, spent burn and traded creatures fill the graveyard, so in the mid game it is repeatable removal and reach. It competes with Barbarian Ring for graveyard cards, so count before you activate.
- RG Zoo: One mana for a 1/1 that pays {R}, taps and exiles two cards from your graveyard to deal 2 damage to any target. Cracked fetchlands, spent burn and dead creatures fill the graveyard, so in the mid game it is repeatable removal and reach. Graveyard hate such as Withered Wretch, Tormod's Crypt or Phyrexian Furnace leaves it without cards to exile.
