Premodern archetypes that play Mother of Runes
- The Solution: She is in about nine of ten lists, mostly as three copies. Tap her to give one of your creatures, herself included, protection from a color until end of turn, which stops targeted removal and blockers of that color. She cannot use it on the turn she arrives or during the opponent's next turn.
- Dromar Control: In about half the lists, three copies: tap her to give a creature you control protection from a color, so Swords to Plowshares or Smother aimed at it does nothing. She cannot tap the turn she arrives, and protection does not help against Wrath of God, Pernicious Deed, Diabolic Edict or Engineered Plague, which do not target; Plague naming Cleric kills Mother herself.
- White Weenie: In response to removal she gives the target protection from that color, so Swords, Lightning Bolt or Smother fizzle, and on the attack protection makes a creature unblockable by creatures of that color. She does not stop colorless sources such as Cursed Scroll, Masticore, Triskelion or Powder Keg, or effects that neither target the creature nor deal damage, such as Wrath of God, Diabolic Edict and Engineered Plague. She needs a turn before she can tap, so opponents kill her first if they can.
- Rebels: One mana: tap to give a creature you control protection from a color until end of turn, which saves Lin Sivvi from Swords to Plowshares, Smother or Lightning Bolt, or makes an attacker unblockable by creatures of that color. She cannot tap in the turn she arrives, and she does nothing against colorless damage from Masticore, Triskelion or Cursed Scroll, against Wrath of God or against an Edict.
