How to play Premodern Mono Black: a disruption-first midrange deck that strips the opponent's hand with Duress, Cabal Therapy and Hypnotic Specter, then wins the ensuing topdeck war with Graveborn Muse, Cursed Scroll and the Mishra's Factory plus Wasteland land package. This guide covers the game plan, key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup and a full sideboard plan.
How the deck wins
- The first two turns are about their hand: Duress takes the best noncreature card and shows you the coast, Cabal Therapy (informed by that Duress) strips every copy of the card that matters, and Dark Ritual lets a turn-one Hypnotic Specter keep the discard coming forever.
- From there it is pure attrition: Ravenous Rats and Withered Wretch trade up, Smother, Diabolic Edict and Snuff Out answer what resolves, and Wasteland plus Mishra's Factory win the land war that fair decks never expect.
- Both players end up topdecking, and that war is rigged: Graveborn Muse and Phyrexian Arena draw you two cards a turn, and Cursed Scroll turns the empty hand the deck naturally produces into repeatable removal and reach.

Key cards
- Hypnotic Specter: The signature threat: every connection strips a random card, so an unanswered turn-one Specter often wins single-handedly. Ritual into Hyppie is the most feared opening in the format.
- Dark Ritual: Three mana for one card: a turn-one Specter, a turn-one Rats plus Duress, or a turn-two Graveborn Muse. The explosiveness that makes a fair midrange deck play like an aggro deck.
- Duress: The surgical strike: takes the removal spell, sweeper or combo piece before it matters, and the information it gives makes every later Cabal Therapy a guaranteed hit.
- Cabal Therapy: The blowout: name correctly and every copy disappears, then flash it back for free by sacrificing a Ravenous Rats whose work is done. The best card in the deck against combo.
- Graveborn Muse: Card advantage on a body: she draws you a card per Zombie each upkeep, counting herself, Withered Wretch and Plaguebearer. Two extra cards a turn ends any attrition war; just respect the life she costs.
- Withered Wretch: Main-deck graveyard hate on a beating: a 2/2 for two that eats Replenish piles, Reanimator targets and flashback one mana at a time. Extremely live in the current metagame.
- Cursed Scroll: Inevitability: the deck empties both hands by design, and with an empty hand Scroll deals 2 to anything, every turn. Your best card in every topdeck war.
- Wasteland: With Mishra's Factory, the colorless land war: strand a greedy manabase (Landstill duals, Serra's Sanctum) while the Factories attack. The lands win games the spells cannot.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or three Swamps, a turn-one discard spell and a threat behind it: the standard keep.
- Dark Ritual hands: Ritual plus Specter, or Ritual plus double discard, is worth keeping almost every time.
- Against aggro, removal-heavy hands with early blockers: Ravenous Rats holds the ground surprisingly well.
Ship
- Hands that do nothing on turns one and two: a reactive draw loses to every proactive deck in the format.
- One-Swamp hands leaning on Factory and Wasteland: colorless lands cast nothing in this deck.
- Top-heavy hands without Dark Ritual to cheat the curve.
Mono Black is a proactive deck wearing a midrange suit: the opening hand must attack their hand or their life total by turn two. Card quality means nothing if it arrives after the game is decided.
Play tips and sequencing
- Duress before Cabal Therapy: the information turns Therapy from a coin flip into a guaranteed two-for-one.
- Flash back Cabal Therapy with bodies whose job is done: a Ravenous Rats that already traded its card, or a Withered Wretch facing removal anyway.
- Spend life like a resource but budget it: Ritual aggression, Arena draws, Snuff Out and Dystopia all cost life, and Sligh will make you pay for every point.
- Against control, lead threats into their open mana one at a time and keep Cursed Scroll for the long game: it wins through any number of counterspells.
- Wasteland greedy lands on sight against Landstill and Enchantress (Serra's Sanctum above all); against fair decks, hold it for their splash color.
- Keep your Swamp count honest: Smother, Drain Life and Knight of Stromgald want black mana, and Snuff Out needs a Swamp on the table to be free.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (favorable): Their bad matchup, and the reason to sleeve Swamps: Duress and Therapy strip the combo, and Smother or Diabolic Edict kills a 12/12 without ever targeting it. Keep a removal spell back and make every counterspell they hold a dead card.
- Goblins (unfavorable): They go wider than one-for-one removal can handle and Goblin Ringleader out-grinds your discard. Engineered Plague on Goblin is the whole sideboard plan: two copies nearly lock them out. Watch for Dralnu's Crusade as their counter-tech.
- Sligh (even to unfavorable): Every removal spell is live, but your own deck costs life (Ritual, Arena, Snuff Out) and their reach punishes it. Spinning Darkness and Drain Life swing races; keep Phyrexian Arena in check and let Ravenous Rats block.
- Enchantress (unfavorable): Shroud blanks your removal and the engine out-draws discard within a few turns. Rip the engine on turns one and two or lose slowly; post-board Dystopia and Gloom are real outs, and Wasteland on Serra's Sanctum buys time.
- Landstill (unfavorable): Their counters trade one for one and their card advantage runs deeper. Your angles: an early Specter through Duress cover, the Factory-and-Wasteland land war, and Cursed Scroll. Post-board Gloom taxes half their deck out of the game.
- Replenish (even to favorable): Duress and Therapy rip the pile before it is assembled and main-deck Withered Wretch eats the graveyard their whole plan lives in. They can still goldfish past a slow draw, so keep the clock honest.
- The Rock (even): A true attrition mirror: their bodies are bigger, your disruption is deeper. Graveborn Muse and Cursed Scroll decide the topdeck war; Spiritmonger outclasses everything you play, so save an edict for it.
- Deadguy Ale (even): A resource mirror where their Swords to Plowshares and Exalted Angel are the edge. Do not let their Phyrexian Arena stay on the battlefield, remove Nantuko Shade before a big attack, and stop Hypnotic Specter from connecting. Cursed Scroll and Powder Keg on your side pull their Disenchant and Seal of Cleansing in after board.
- Aluren (favorable): Aluren's hardest matchup, because it attacks all three pillars at once: Duress and Cabal Therapy take the enchantment, Hypnotic Specter strips combo pieces at random, Wasteland and Dust Bowl hit the double-mana lands, and Engineered Plague can name Beast. Their answers are Compost and Masticore after board.
- Zombies (favorable): Your discard and edicts trade one-for-one with their lords, their Snuff Out and Gloom are dead against you, and Nantuko Shade blocks a Lord-pumped 3/3 all day. Rotlung Reanimator and Lord of the Undead's recursion are what they lean on, so kill Rotlung first and expect Zombie Master's swampwalk after board.
Sideboard guide
- vs Tribal swarms (Goblins, Elves): Engineered Plague, Plague Spitter, Powder Keg. Plague on Goblin turns their lords into blank cardboard and a second copy nearly locks the game. Plague Spitter and Powder Keg mop up the one-toughness boards Plague leaves behind.
- vs White and green-white decks (Landstill, Enchantress): Gloom, Dystopia. Gloom makes every white answer cost three more; Dystopia eats their green and white permanents turn after turn for a trickle of life. Both resolve through discard cover and take over on their own.
- vs Burn and racing aggro: Spinning Darkness, Contagion. Free interaction that breaks the race: Spinning Darkness exiles three black cards from your graveyard to kill a threat and gain 3 life, Contagion answers two small creatures without spending mana.
- vs Ability-driven decks (Survival, Goblin utility creatures): Cursed Totem. Shuts off Survival of the Fittest engines, Goblin Tinkerer and Grim Lavamancer alike. Remember it also disables your own Withered Wretch and Plaguebearer: bring it in only where the trade is clearly yours.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $250–$600. The core costs pocket change, but the tuned list does not: never-reprinted Cursed Scroll runs near $90 a copy and the Dystopia sideboard adds more. A Scroll-light budget build stays around $250.
- Start with Swamps, the full discard suite and Hypnotic Specter: the deck's core is almost free.
- Add Graveborn Muse and Phyrexian Arena for the long-game engine.
- Add four Mishra's Factory: free pressure and Wrath insurance in one land slot.
- Add the Wasteland playset: it converts the Landstill and Enchantress matchups from hopeless to close.
- Cursed Scroll comes last: the deck's biggest expense but its best topdeck-war card. The tuned sideboard (Dystopia, Powder Keg) is a luxury, not a requirement.
