Premodern archetypes that play Meddling Mage
- The Solution: You choose a nonland card name as it enters, and from then on spells with that name cannot be cast, even while you are tapped out. It does not stop activated abilities such as cycling, cards already on the battlefield or cards put onto the battlefield without being cast, and it stops working once the Mage leaves the battlefield or loses its abilities to Humility.
- Dromar Control: In all but one list since April, always four: as it enters you name a nonland card, and no player can cast spells with that name while the Mage is on the battlefield, so it works while you are tapped out. It does not stop copies already on the battlefield, activated abilities or cycling, it also stops your own copies, and removal ends the lock.
- Gro-a-Tog: Two mana: name a nonland card, and spells with that name can no longer be cast. Wrath of God, Pernicious Deed, Stasis, Replenish, Survival of the Fittest or Fireblast. It does not stop abilities, so a cycled Decree of Justice or a Pernicious Deed already on the battlefield still works. In about half of the lists.
Sideboard plans with Meddling Mage
- Replenish vs. Counterspell and disruption decks. Meddling Mage is in nine of ten sideboards: name Counterspell, Stifle, Annul or Exhume, and it doubles as a clock.
- Landstill vs. Combo and creature decks. Meddling Mage is in four of five sideboards: naming Phyrexian Dreadnought, Replenish, Oath of Druids, Vindicate or Armageddon stops the opponent from casting it, though it does nothing against a copy already on the battlefield, and the Mage attacks for 2.
- Tron vs. Combo and control. Meddling Mage names the key card (Stasis, Replenish, Exhume, Tinker, Stifle or a counterspell) and buys the time the deck needs to set up.
