Premodern White Weenie Deck Guide (2026)
Premodern White Weenie is a mono-white aggro deck: cheap creatures with shadow and protection, Swords to Plowshares, and Armageddon to end the game. It is one of the most played decks in the format, with 115 lists on MTGDecks over the last six months, and it wins small events every month: two 5-0 MTGO League runs in September and the 40-player Spring Fling 1K in March. Its best big-event result in the deck archive here is a five-color version, fourth of 134 at Grand Pre Louisville. The reference list is Kennan Durr's top eight at the 27-player Geddon Gang Fall 1K on September 26. This guide covers the plan, the key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup, sideboard plans and a budget path.
How the deck wins
- Curve out. One-drops on turn one (Savannah Lions, Mother of Runes), two two-drops on turns two and three, and a face-down Exalted Angel on turn three. Mother of Runes protects the best attacker, and protection from a color also means creatures of that color cannot block it.
- Attack through blockers. Soltari Priest, Soltari Monk and Soltari Champion have shadow and can only be blocked by other shadow creatures, Silver Knight and White Knight have first strike and protection from red or black, and Whipcorder taps the one blocker that matters. Swords to Plowshares removes what is left.
- Lock the game. Once your board is ahead, Armageddon destroys every land: your creatures are already paid for and keep attacking, while the opponent cannot cast anything. Tithe finds Plains to rebuild first, Cursed Scroll with exactly one card in hand is 2 damage a turn, and Crusade or Glorious Anthem turns a board of 2/1s into 3/2s.

Key cards
- Mother of Runes: The best one-drop in the deck. In response to removal she gives the target protection from that color, so Swords, Lightning Bolt or Smother fizzle, and on the attack protection makes a creature unblockable by creatures of that color. She needs a turn before she can tap, so opponents kill her first if they can.
- Soltari Priest: Two power with shadow and protection from red: only shadow creatures can block it, and red burn cannot touch it. Against Sligh and Goblins it is the best card in the deck; Soltari Monk is the same card with protection from black, for the black matchups.
- Silver Knight: First strike and protection from red for two: it blocks every Goblin and Jackal Pup forever and attacks past red blockers. In nine of ten lists; White Knight is the version with protection from black.
- Whipcorder: Taps a blocker, an attacker or a mana creature for W, and can be cast face down for three and turned up for W. In the Rebels build Ramosian Sergeant searches it out, since it is a Rebel.
- Exalted Angel: The top end: face down on turn three for three, turned up for 2WW on turn four, and a 4/5 flier that gains the damage it deals swings races by eight life a turn. Turning a morph face up does not use the stack, so nothing can respond to it.
- Swords to Plowshares: Four copies in every list. It exiles the one creature that stops your attack or wins their game: Terravore, Psychatog, Akroma or a Phyrexian Dreadnought.
- Armageddon: The reason control decks fear the archetype. Cast it the turn your board is clearly ahead: every land is destroyed, your creatures keep attacking and they rebuild from zero. Cast while behind it loses the game, and held while ahead it is wasted. Against Terravore decks it only makes Terravore bigger.
- Cursed Scroll: Reach for the end of the game. It reveals a card at random from your hand, so with exactly one card in hand you always name it right and deal 2 damage a turn for three mana, to a player or a blocker. With an empty hand it does nothing.
- Enlightened Tutor: Puts Armageddon, Crusade, Worship or a sideboard enchantment such as Aura of Silence on top of your library for W, at instant speed. It costs a card, so use it for the card that wins the matchup.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or three Plains with a one-drop, a two-drop and something to follow: Plains, Plains, Savannah Lions, Mother of Runes, Soltari Priest, Silver Knight and Swords to Plowshares is the archetypal keep.
- Two lands, three cheap creatures and Armageddon: two turns of creatures, then Armageddon on turn four.
- Against control, two lands, two creatures and Armageddon or Exalted Angel: you win a long game only by taking away their mana.
Ship
- Hands with no creature before turn three, or with five or more lands.
- One land without two one-drops; the deck has no card draw to fix it later.
- Armageddon, Worship or enchantments with few creatures: they only work with a board.
White Weenie mulligans for tempo: a six-card hand with a one-drop and two two-drops beats a seven-card hand that starts on turn three. Against burn and Goblins look for Silver Knight, Soltari Priest and Mother of Runes; against control, for creature count and Armageddon.
Play tips and sequencing
- Lead with the creature they must answer. Mother of Runes on turn one protects everything after it; against a deck with many one-mana removal spells, lead with Savannah Lions and play Mother when she survives to untap.
- Keep Mother of Runes untapped. Her protection is your answer to Swords, burn and Smother; tapping her to push two damage through is right only when it wins the game or they are tapped out.
- Cast Armageddon with the math done. Count your damage against their life and the blockers they will still have: if you win in two or three attacks, cast it; if not, attack another turn first. Keep a Plains in hand, Tithe helps, so you rebuild faster than they do.
- Morph Exalted Angel on turn three. Face down it is a 2/2 that dies to any 2 damage, so turn it up for 2WW before blocking, before attacking into a first striker, or when they are tapped out.
- Tap blockers at the beginning of combat. Whipcorder taps a creature for W; use it on your turn before you declare attackers, or on their turn before their attack, so they cannot react with the creature.
- Keep one card in hand for Cursed Scroll. It reveals at random, so it is reliable only with exactly one card in hand.
- Respect the sweepers. Protection from red survives Pyroclasm, and Mother of Runes can give it in response, but nothing saves you from Wrath of God, Pernicious Deed or Engineered Plague: deploy only what you need to win in time and keep the rest in hand.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (favorable): Your creatures come down before their counters matter, Phyrexian Dreadnought cannot block shadow, and Swords to Plowshares exiles it for good. Their outs are Powder Keg on your one-drops, Chain of Vapor and Vision Charm for tempo, and Stifle on Mother of Runes or Whipcorder; Armageddon after your board is set leaves them without mana for counters. MTGDecks: 75 percent over 20 matches.
- Goblins (even): Silver Knight and Soltari Priest have protection from red: no Goblin can block or burn them, and Silver Knight walls every red attacker. The problem is card advantage and reach: Goblin Ringleader, Siege-Gang Commander and Gempalm Incinerator win the long game, and Mogg Fanatic and Goblin Sharpshooter kill Mother of Runes, Savannah Lions and Soltari Monk. After boarding Absolute Law gives every creature protection from red, and Warmth or Circle of Protection: Red blunt the reach. MTGDecks: 54 percent over 24 matches.
- Sligh (slightly favorable): Protection from red is the whole matchup: Silver Knight and Soltari Priest cannot be burned or blocked by red creatures, and Exalted Angel's life gain outraces Fireblast. Their best cards are Sulfuric Vortex, which stops your life gain and hits you every turn, and Grim Lavamancer against your other creatures. Bring Warmth, Circle of Protection: Red and Absolute Law, and keep Disenchant for Vortex and Cursed Scroll. MTGDecks: 55 percent over 20 matches.
- Enchantress (unfavorable): Solitary Confinement prevents all damage to them and Parallax Wave exiles your attackers, so the race is lost unless you answer both. Swords handles Argothian Enchantress, and Armageddon destroys Serra's Sanctum and every land they need to rebuild. Bring Aura of Silence, Seal of Cleansing and Disenchant for Confinement and the Wave. Limited data: 25 percent over 16 matches.
- Landstill (even): Their clock is slow and Armageddon is your best card, since they need lands for counterspells, Decree of Justice and Mishra's Factory. Respect Wrath of God, Swords and Humility, which turns your shadow and protection creatures into vanilla 1/1s. Standstill helps you once your board is out: you keep attacking without casting spells. Very limited data: 50 percent over 8 matches.
- Replenish (unfavorable): Parallax Wave exiles your attackers until it leaves, Swords and Abeyance slow you, and a resolved Replenish with Opalescence brings back a board of enchantment creatures bigger than yours. Pressure plus Armageddon before they assemble it is the plan; Aura of Silence, Seal of Cleansing and Disenchant answer the Wave. Very limited data: 13 percent over 8 matches.
- Elves (slightly unfavorable): They go wide faster: Gaea's Cradle, Priest of Titania and Deranged Hermit's squirrels outgrow your board, and Masticore pings your X/1s. Elves cannot block your shadow creatures, Swords answers Masticore or Deranged Hermit, and Cursed Totem after boarding shuts off every mana elf and Masticore, but also your own Mother and Whipcorder. Very limited data: 0 percent over 7 matches.
- Terrageddon (slightly unfavorable): Both decks want to cast Armageddon first, theirs comes with Mox Diamond, Weathered Wayfarer and Sylvan Library to rebuild, and every land in a graveyard makes Terravore bigger. Nimble Mongoose has shroud, and Swords and maindeck Naturalize answer your best cards. Save Swords and Reprisal for Terravore, and cast your own Armageddon only when Terravore is not on the table. Very limited data: 33 percent over 6 matches.
- Full English Breakfast (slightly unfavorable): A combo deck with Survival of the Fittest and Hermit Druid that you have to beat on speed. Swords to Plowshares on Hermit Druid or Volrath's Shapeshifter at the right moment, Seal of Cleansing or Disenchant on Survival, and Tormod's Crypt after boarding against the Hermit line are your tools. Their Pyroclasm after boarding kills everything without protection from red. Very limited data: 17 percent over 6 matches.
- Mono Black (even): Soltari Monk and White Knight have protection from black: Smother cannot target them and black creatures cannot block them. Duress, Cabal Therapy and Ravenous Rats take little from a deck of cheap creatures, but Diabolic Edict, Withered Wretch, Nantuko Shade and a fast Hypnotic Specter grind. Bring Light of Day, which stops every black creature from attacking or blocking, and Absolute Grace. Limited data: 53 percent over 15 matches.
- Oath of Druids (unfavorable): Your creature count turns Oath of Druids on for them every upkeep, handing them a free Terravore, and Sphere of Resistance, Thermokarst, Winter's Grasp and Swords slow the rest. Answer Oath at once with Seal of Cleansing, Disenchant or Aura of Silence, and do not overextend while it is on the table; Armageddon only makes Terravore bigger. Very limited data: 29 percent over 7 matches.
- Stasis (slightly favorable): Your one- and two-drops come down before Stasis, and Seal of Cleansing and Aura of Silence destroy it without needing mana, so keep one on the table. Black Vise barely hurts a deck that empties its hand, but Daze, Counterspell and Fire // Ice, which kills two X/1s at once, slow you. Very limited data: 60 percent over 5 matches.
- Psychatog (even): Soltari and Mother of Runes put them on a clock that Psychatog cannot block, and Armageddon strands a deck that needs lands for counterspells. Their answers are Smother, Sickening Dreams, which kills a board of X/1s but not your protection-from-black creatures, and Counterspell or Foil on Exalted Angel; Tormod's Crypt after boarding keeps Psychatog small. Very limited data: 50 percent over 8 matches.
- UG Madness (even): A tempo race: Wild Mongrel and Arrogant Wurm outsize your 2/1s, and Circular Logic and Daze counter Exalted Angel and Armageddon. They cannot block your shadow creatures, Swords handles the Wurm, and Reprisal after boarding kills Arrogant Wurm and Roar of the Wurm's token. Very limited data.
- The Rock (even): Pernicious Deed is the card to play around, so deploy only what you need and keep the rest in hand. Smother cannot target Soltari Monk or White Knight, Ravenous Baloth and Krosan Tusker outsize your creatures, and Swords answers them. Armageddon after a Deed costs them the mana to rebuild. Very limited data: 57 percent over 7 matches.
- Deadguy Ale (even): Their Swords to Plowshares answers your creatures, but Vindicate is black, so Soltari Monk and White Knight shrug it off, and Hypnotic Specter cannot block shadow. Exalted Angel is in both decks, so save Swords for theirs, and expect Engineered Plague after boarding naming Cleric, which kills Mother of Runes and the Soltari Priests and Monks. No meaningful match data.
- Reanimator (slightly favorable): They can win on turn one or two, but a slower start loses to your clock and to Swords to Plowshares, which exiles a reanimated Akroma or Phantom Nishoba, since Akroma's protection is from black and red. Tormod's Crypt after boarding exiles their graveyard in response to Reanimate or Exhume. Very limited data: 80 percent over 5 matches.
- Tron (slightly favorable): A slow control deck against a fast clock: Armageddon takes out the Urza lands they need for everything, and Wrath of God, Decree of Justice and Masticore are their outs. Keep a creature or two in hand against Wrath, and Swords the Masticore. No match data.
- Clerics (slightly favorable): Soltari Monk and White Knight have protection from black, so their Clerics cannot block them and Smother cannot target them. The dangers are Cabal Archon's drain, Rotlung Reanimator's Zombies and Engineered Plague after boarding naming Soltari. Light of Day from your sideboard stops every black creature from attacking or blocking. No match data.
- The Solution (slightly favorable): Lightning Bolt and Fire // Ice cannot touch Silver Knight or Soltari Priest, and your curve is lower than theirs. Their real threats are Lightning Angel, Mother of Runes, which protects their creatures from your Swords, and Worship after boarding, which stops your damage while they control a creature; keep Seal of Cleansing or Disenchant for it. Very limited data: 80 percent over 5 matches.
- Dromar Control (even): Shadowmage Infiltrator has fear, so your white creatures cannot block it, Meddling Mage can name Armageddon or Swords, and Vindicate, Swords and Duress trade one for one. Soltari Monk and White Knight shrug off Vindicate, and Armageddon hurts a three-color mana base more than yours. No match data.
- Aluren (even): Aluren is symmetrical, so once it resolves your one- to three-drops are free and instant-speed too, but their loops win on the spot. Aura of Silence makes Aluren cost six, Seal of Cleansing and Disenchant destroy it, though they can combo in response, and your clock is usually faster than their setup. Very limited data.
- Zombies (slightly favorable): Soltari Monk and White Knight have protection from black, so Zombies cannot block them. Carnophage, Sarcomancy and Lord of the Undead race well, Duress and Cabal Therapy take Armageddon or Crusade, and Gloom after boarding makes your white spells cost three more. Bring Light of Day, which stops every black creature from attacking or blocking. No match data.
- MUD (slightly favorable): Your one-drops come down before Winter Orb, Tangle Wire and Sphere of Resistance, and Aura of Silence makes each of their artifacts cost two more. Seal of Cleansing and Disenchant answer the lock pieces, Triskelion shoots your X/1s, and Swords answers it. Very limited data.
Sideboard guide
- vs Sligh and Goblins: Warmth, Circle of Protection: Red, Absolute Law. Warmth gains 2 life for every red spell, Circle of Protection: Red prevents a red source's damage for one mana, and Absolute Law gives every creature protection from red, so Mogg Fanatic, Goblin Sharpshooter and Lightning Bolt cannot touch your board. Worship with a protection-from-red creature is a lock against both: they cannot burn the creature, so they cannot bring you below 1. Out: Armageddon and Enlightened Tutor; against Sligh keep Disenchant for Sulfuric Vortex and Cursed Scroll.
- vs Enchantress, Replenish, Oath of Druids, Stasis, Aluren and MUD: Aura of Silence, Seal of Cleansing, Disenchant. Aura of Silence, in two of three sideboards, makes their artifacts and enchantments cost two more and destroys one when you sacrifice it; with Seal of Cleansing and Disenchant you answer Solitary Confinement, Parallax Wave, Oath of Druids, Stasis, Aluren and Winter Orb. Out: Crusade and Cursed Scroll.
- vs Reanimator, Full English Breakfast and Psychatog: Tormod's Crypt. Tormod's Crypt, in eight of ten sideboards: exile their graveyard in response to Reanimate or Exhume, after a Hermit Druid activation, or before Psychatog grows. Swords and Reprisal handle whatever still resolves.
- vs Elves, Full English Breakfast, Goblins and MUD: Cursed Totem. Cursed Totem stops every activated ability of creatures: mana elves, Masticore, Hermit Druid, Goblin Sharpshooter, Mogg Fanatic and Goblin Welder. It stops your own Mother of Runes and Whipcorder too, so cut Whipcorder and cast the Totem when Mother has done her job.
- vs Terrageddon, Oath of Druids, UG Madness, Reanimator and Stiflenought: Reprisal. Reprisal destroys a creature with power 4 or more for two mana at instant speed: Terravore, Arrogant Wurm, Akroma, Phyrexian Dreadnought or Ravenous Baloth. Two copies are common.
- vs Mono Black, Zombies, Clerics and Deadguy Ale: Light of Day, Absolute Grace. Light of Day stops every black creature from attacking or blocking, which decides the Zombies and Clerics matchups on its own, and Absolute Grace gives your creatures protection from black against their removal. Out: Disenchant and Seal of Cleansing against Zombies and Clerics, which play no artifacts or enchantments.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $310–$710. The reference list (Kennan Durr, top eight of 27 at the Geddon Gang Fall 1K, 26 September) costs about $710 with its sideboard at the Premodern-era printings tracked here. The expensive cards are the support: two Cursed Scroll at about $92 each, three Tithe at about $37, two Enlightened Tutor at about $37 and two Tormod's Crypt at about $30. The creatures, Swords to Plowshares and Armageddon are cheap.
- The budget build cuts Tithe, Cursed Scroll and Enlightened Tutor for Plains and Glorious Anthem, and Tormod's Crypt for Phyrexian Furnace: about $310, with the same creatures, Swords and Armageddon.
- If your events allow tournament-legal reprints, the full reference list costs about $470.
- Never cut the core: Mother of Runes, the Soltari, Silver Knight, Exalted Angel, four Swords to Plowshares and Armageddon.
- Upgrade in this order: Exalted Angel and Mother of Runes first, then Enlightened Tutor and Tithe, and Cursed Scroll last.
