Premodern Goblins Deck Guide (2026)
How to play Premodern Goblins: a fast, synergy-driven mono-red aggro deck that turns cheap creatures into explosive starts. This guide walks through the game plan, mulligan decisions, key sequencing, every major matchup and a full sideboard plan.
How the deck wins
- Goblins is a synergy aggro deck, not raw beatdown: cheap bodies plus a lord (Goblin Warchief) and a tutor-and-refuel engine (Goblin Matron, Goblin Ringleader) that keeps the pressure coming through one-for-one removal.
- Goblin Lackey is the dream opening. Connect on turn one and you put Goblin Piledriver, Siege-Gang Commander or Goblin Sharpshooter into play for free, an often unbeatable start (you have a turn-one Lackey in roughly one game in four).
- When the early rush stalls you grind it out: Goblin Ringleader refills your hand and Siege-Gang Commander plus Mogg Fanatic turn the board into reach and removal. Goblins races and grinds equally well.
Core cards
- 4 Goblin Lackey
- 4 Goblin Piledriver
- 4 Goblin Warchief
- 4 Goblin Matron
- 4 Goblin Ringleader
- 3 Siege-Gang Commander
- 2 Goblin Sharpshooter
- 4 Mogg Fanatic
- 2 Gempalm Incinerator
- 4 Goblin Sledder
- 2 Goblin Burrows
- 4 Rishadan Port
Key cards
- Goblin Lackey: Turn-one enabler. If it connects, drop a Piledriver, Siege-Gang or Sharpshooter for free. Only keep it when you have other goblins to follow up: a lone Lackey is just a 1/1.
- Goblin Piledriver: Main damage engine: +2/+0 for every other attacking goblin, plus protection from blue. A wide board makes it lethal in a turn or two.
- Goblin Warchief: Lord that gives every goblin haste and costs them one less. Enables explosive multi-spell turns and immediate Lackey or Piledriver attacks.
- Goblin Matron: Tutors the right goblin for the matchup: Sharpshooter versus creatures, Siege-Gang or Gempalm for reach, Skirk Prospector for a burst turn.
- Goblin Ringleader: Card-advantage engine: look at the top four and keep every goblin. The reason the deck runs 32 to 36 goblins.
- Goblin Sharpshooter: Pinger that untaps whenever any creature dies. With Skirk Prospector (sacrifice goblins for mana) it becomes a machine gun that kills almost any creature, backbreaking versus Elves and other creature decks.
- Siege-Gang Commander: Finisher and sacrifice outlet: three bodies plus reach to the face or to pick off blockers.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- At least two lands plus meaningful action: an early body and a curve that spends mana well over turns one to three.
- A turn-one Goblin Lackey only when you have other goblins in hand to cheat in.
- Hands with a lord or Ringleader and bodies, even without Lackey. The deck has a strong Plan B.
Ship
- Lands with no early plays.
- One-land or mana-light speculative hands.
- All-expensive hands with no turn one or two development.
Do not over-mulligan hunting for Lackey: with 32 to 36 goblins, most six-card hands curve out. After sideboarding, remember that non-goblin cards weaken Ringleader.
Play tips and sequencing
- Lead with Lackey only when you can follow it up, then protect it and swing on turn two for a free fattie.
- Hold Mogg Fanatic to clear a blocker for Lackey or to finish the game, rather than trading it away early.
- Play Goblin Warchief before your other goblins so they get the cost reduction and haste the same turn.
- Against open blue mana, bait counters with a lesser threat and save the Piledriver or Lackey you most need.
- Use Rishadan Port on the opponent's draw step, or to keep them off a key untapped color on your own turn.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (even): Race them while denying blue mana with Port and blasts. They fold to a fast start but punish slow draws.
- Enchantress (unfavorable): You must win before Opalescence and Parallax Wave lock the board. Tranquil Domain and Naturalize after board are essential.
- Landstill (even): Your house when piloted well: outlast one-for-one removal with Ringleader and do not overcommit into Wrath of God.
- Sligh (even to favorable): Higher ceiling thanks to Ringleader refueling. Watch for a post-board Pyrostatic Pillar.
- The Rock (favorable): Speed plus Ringleader card advantage outpaces their attrition. Keep your threat density high.
- Mono Black (favorable): Race the discard and removal. Dralnu's Crusade after board dodges Engineered Plague.
- Replenish (unfavorable): Hard matchup: race and disrupt their card draw. Wasteland for permanent disruption, Duress in RB builds.
- Elves (very favorable): Goblin Sharpshooter wrecks their board of X/1 creatures. Tutoring for it with Matron is often game-winning.
Sideboard guide
- vs Control and Landstill: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Duress (RB), Dralnu's Crusade (RB). Do not break Standstill unless you commit enough to punish it.
- vs Enchantress: Tranquil Domain, Naturalize, Anarchy (RB). Press tempo, Port them off mana and break the enchantment lock fast.
- vs Sligh and Burn: Pyrokinesis. Free removal in the race. Mind a post-board Pyrostatic Pillar.
- vs Elves and creature decks: Pyrokinesis, Goblin Sharpshooter. Sharpshooter is the trump card: tutor for it with Matron.
- vs Stiflenought and blue tempo: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Naturalize. Trim the slow goblins (Matron, Siege-Gang) to be faster and answer Dreadnought.
- vs Replenish and graveyard decks: Tormod's Crypt, Pyroblast, Duress (RB). Disrupt the engine and race their stumbles.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $275–$535. Full competitive build, varying by manabase and printings.
- Start mono-red with all Mountains (~$50–100): the cleanest mana, and immune to nonbasic hate.
- Add Rishadan Port or Wasteland, the single biggest power upgrade.
- Splash a color later with fetchlands plus pain lands (Karplusan Forest, Sulfurous Springs).
- Tune the sideboard with format staples last.
- Keep 32 to 36 goblins so Matron and Ringleader still work: do not cut the tribal engine to save money.
