Premodern UG Madness Deck Guide (2026)
How to play Premodern UG Madness: a blue-green tempo deck that turns discarding into a discount, flooding the board with free Rootwallas, instant-speed Arrogant Wurms and 6/6 Wurm tokens while Daze and Circular Logic protect the lead. Covers the classic build and the Survival of the Fittest variant, with mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup and a full sideboard plan.
How the deck wins
- Madness turns the drawback into the deal: Wild Mongrel, Aquamoeba and Careful Study discard cards on purpose, and the discards come back cheaper. Basking Rootwalla costs nothing, Arrogant Wurm is a 4/4 trampler for two at instant speed, Circular Logic counters for a single blue. Every 'discard a card' in this deck reads 'cast another spell'.
- The graveyard is a second hand: Roar of the Wurm flashes back as a 6/6 for four, Call of the Herd makes two Elephants from one card, Deep Analysis draws from the bin, and a single Wonder in the graveyard gives every creature you control flying. Answers that trade one for one never actually trade one for one.
- The Survival of the Fittest variant trades some speed for inevitability: discarding Squee, Goblin Nabob (who returns every upkeep) turns Survival into a free draw engine, a creature toolbox and a permanent Mongrel pump. Built that way, the deck out-grinds even The Rock and Landstill.

Key cards
- Wild Mongrel: The best two-drop in the format: a free, uncounterable discard outlet on a growing, color-shifting body. Every card in hand is +1/+1 or a madness spell; nearly every game plan starts with it.
- Basking Rootwalla: The free threat: pitch it to any outlet and madness it into play for zero mana. A one-drop that demands removal or deals ten damage over a game, deployed while you spend mana on something else.
- Arrogant Wurm: The tempo payoff: a 4/4 trampler for two mana at instant speed. Discard it in their end step, untap with counter mana open, and the game often ends right there.
- Circular Logic: Madness Counterspell: pitched to a Mongrel it counters anything for one blue mana. The reason nobody can safely resolve a sweeper or combo piece against your 'aggro' deck.
- Careful Study: One mana: two cards deep and two discards. The best enabler in the deck, and the most misplayed card in it: cast blind, with nothing that wants to be discarded, it is pure card disadvantage.
- Roar of the Wurm: Six power from the graveyard without spending a card. Quiet Speculation fetching Roars and Deep Analysis puts three flashback spells in the bin for two mana: absurd value in grindy games.
- Wonder: One copy in the graveyard and the whole team flies. It converts board stalls into three-turn clocks; the primers agree it should almost never be sided out.
- Survival of the Fittest: The variant engine: discard a creature, tutor a creature. With Squee returning each upkeep it is a free card every turn, and the toolbox (Wonder, silver bullets, more Wurms) lets Madness play wide, tall or big as the matchup demands.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- A discard outlet, a madness payoff and two lands: Mongrel plus Rootwalla or Arrogant Wurm is the classic start.
- Careful Study hands, but only with madness or flashback cards to pitch: Study finds outlets, it does not replace them.
- Against combo and control, tempo hands with Daze and Circular Logic: a modest clock plus free counters wins those games.
Ship
- Madness cards without an outlet: a hand of Arrogant Wurms with no way to discard them is a hand of overpriced Wurms.
- One-land hands without Careful Study or Frantic Search to dig.
- Five-land hands: the deck operates beautifully on three lands and hates drawing the sixth.
Outlets first, payoffs second, lands third: the deck does not function without a discard outlet, and almost everything else is replaceable. Cephalid Coliseum makes flooded keeps slightly more forgivable.
Play tips and sequencing
- Never cast Careful Study blind: wait until the discards are madness cards, flashback spells or Wonder. The same goes for Frantic Search.
- End-of-turn discipline wins games: discard Arrogant Wurm at instant speed in their end step, untap, and keep Circular Logic mana open while the Wurm attacks.
- Cards in hand are ammunition: decide deliberately between pumping Mongrel and banking madness value. Pump to win fights and races, not out of habit.
- Get one Wonder into the graveyard against any deck that plans to block, and protect it against graveyard hate before it matters.
- Against sweepers, apply pressure in waves: the flashback half of your deck (Roar, Call, Deep Analysis) rebuilds for free after a Wrath or Deed, so you rarely need to overcommit.
- In the Survival build, fetch Squee at end of turn before your upkeep, and remember Survival itself is the thing opponents must answer: play a second one into removal-heavy fields.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (even): A true tempo fight: their threat is bigger, yours are wider and free. Circular Logic fights the combo turn for one mana. Post-board Annul counters the Dreadnought outright and Waterfront Bouncer returns a resolved one to hand.
- Goblins (even): Rootwalla and Mongrel hold the early turns, Roar walls the ground and Wonder wins the stalled board. Goblin Ringleader still out-grinds you if the game drags: use the flying turns to close.
- Sligh (even): They burn your outlets on sight and race well in game one. After board Chill, Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast tax or counter half their deck; keep a Logic for Fireblast.
- Enchantress (unfavorable): The deck's worst matchup by its own primers: they out-draw the fair plan and Solitary Confinement blanks the swarm. Race hard behind Daze early; post-board Reverent Silence (free against their Forests) and Ray of Revelation are the real outs.
- Landstill (even to favorable): Threat density beats one-for-one answers: every Roar and Call is two threats and Circular Logic taxes their sweepers. Play around Powder Keg by varying mana values, and let the flashback half grind through Wrath of God.
- Mono Black (favorable): Their forced discard backfires: a Hypnotic Specter or Ravenous Rats hit turns into a free Rootwalla or an instant Wurm. Removal trades down against madness costs, and they have no clean sweeper for the swarm. Watch Cursed Scroll on your outlets: it picks off Rootwallas and Mongrels at no card cost.
- Replenish (even): A race you can interact in: Daze and Circular Logic tax the combo turn while a Wonder-powered air force closes. Post-board Annul and Tormod's Crypt double the disruption.
- The Rock (even): Pernicious Deed at two eats your squad, but the flashback half rebuilds for free and Wonder flies over Walls. Roughly 55/45 either way; the Survival build tilts it your way through pure card advantage.
Sideboard guide
- vs Stiflenought and artifact combo: Annul, Waterfront Bouncer. Annul counters a Dreadnought (an artifact) for one mana; Waterfront Bouncer returns a resolved one to hand and doubles as another discard outlet.
- vs Red decks (Sligh, Goblins): Chill, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast. Chill makes every burn spell cost two more, the blasts counter Fireblast and Price of Progress for one mana. The racing matchups turn favorable after board.
- vs Enchantress and enchantment prison: Reverent Silence, Ray of Revelation. Reverent Silence is free whenever the opponent controls a Forest and sweeps every enchantment; Ray of Revelation answers Solitary Confinement twice thanks to flashback.
- vs Graveyard decks and the mirror: Tormod's Crypt. Free graveyard removal that hits Replenish piles, Reanimator and opposing Roars, without costing you tempo. Mind your own Wonder and flashback when you bring it in.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $50–$150. The cheapest competitive deck in the format: every threat has an inexpensive reprint, and a full list with sideboard prices in around fifty dollars. The Survival of the Fittest variant adds a Reserved List rare at a real premium.
- Start with the madness core: Mongrel, Rootwalla, Arrogant Wurm, Aquamoeba, Careful Study and Circular Logic cost pocket change together.
- Add the flashback package (Roar of the Wurm, Call of the Herd, Deep Analysis, Quiet Speculation) and two Wonder.
- Upgrade the mana with Yavimaya Coast and a Cephalid Coliseum.
- Round out the free counters: Daze, plus single Foil and Gush copies.
- The Survival of the Fittest package (Survival plus Squee and toolbox singletons) is the endgame upgrade, not the entry fee.
