Premodern Aluren Deck Guide (2026)
How to play Premodern Aluren: a blue-green creature-combo deck that resolves Aluren, then casts Cavern Harpy, Soul Warden, Raven Familiar and Man-o'-War for free at instant speed until the loop gains unlimited life, draws the deck or empties the opponent's board. This guide covers the combo lines, the mana engine, key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup and a full sideboard plan.
How the deck wins
- Find the enchantment. Four Aluren, four Impulse, three Intuition, three Flash of Insight and four Raven Familiar all dig for it. The cleanest Intuition pile is simply three copies of Aluren: the opponent picks one for your hand, so unless copies have already left the library it is a guaranteed hit.
- Get it onto the battlefield early. Aluren costs 2GG, and the deck solves the double green with lands that tap for two at once: Hickory Woodlot and Havenwood Battleground, backed by City of Traitors and Cloud of Faeries. That makes turn three routine and turn two possible.
- Then convert free creatures into a win. Cavern Harpy plus Soul Warden is unlimited life, plus Raven Familiar sees the whole deck, plus Cloud of Faeries is unlimited mana, plus Man-o'-War bounces their board, plus Rishadan Cutpurse makes them sacrifice every permanent. The skill is recognising which two creatures the current board actually needs.

Key cards
- Aluren: The whole deck. Any creature with mana value 3 or less, free, at instant speed. There is no substitute: a list without four copies is a different archetype. Remember it is symmetrical, so against creature decks resolving it without an immediate plan can lose the game outright.
- Cavern Harpy: The engine. Its enter-the-battlefield ability returns a blue or black creature you control to hand; it is itself blue and black, so it returns itself, and 1 life bounces it back. That is the loop every other creature plugs into.
- Soul Warden: The life engine that makes the loops free. Each creature entering gains a life, which pays for the Harpy bounces indefinitely. Never meant to be cast for mana: the deck's lands make blue and green only, Aluren ignores the white.
- Raven Familiar: Dig, both before and during the combo. Looks at the top three and takes one, and inside a Harpy loop with Soul Warden that means seeing the entire library while gaining life.
- Man-o'-War: Combo piece and the deck's best tempo answer at once. It bounces Phyrexian Dreadnought cleanly, and in a loop it returns every creature the opponent controls. Never cut it against Stiflenought.
- Impulse: The cheap consistency card, four copies. Look at four, take one, and it is the right spell to cast before committing to a fragile line rather than after.
- Intuition: The best way to find Aluren: name three copies and the opponent has to hand you one. Watch the library count, because once copies are gone the pile stops being a guarantee.
- Chain of Vapor: The answer card that stays in the deck. It bounces Humility, Solitary Confinement, a Sphere effect or an Engineered Plague naming Beast, and it answers Dreadnought in a pinch.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Aluren plus functional mana: a green double land, two more mana sources or Cloud of Faeries, and at least one useful creature or cantrip.
- The Intuition line: Hickory Woodlot, Island, Intuition, a third mana source and a reasonable follow-up.
- A fast Cloud hand: a depletion land, Island or City of Traitors, Cloud of Faeries, Aluren and one engine creature. Post-board against blue, Xantid Swarm or Show and Tell with a realistic mana plan counts too.
Ship
- No access to green mana and no Show and Tell or cantrip route to a green source. Also: Aluren with only Islands and City of Traitors.
- Several combo creatures but no Aluren, Intuition, Impulse or Flash. Soul Warden-heavy hands without a route to the enchantment are the classic trap.
- One land without an exact powerful sequence, two City of Traitors with no plan for the sacrifice trigger, or any hand whose only route loses to a single Wasteland.
Aluren mulligans for a functional route to the enchantment, not for a collection of individually powerful cards. Ask four questions of every seven: how do I find Aluren, how do I make 2GG, what is my earliest realistic combo turn, and which single opposing card beats this hand. No answer to the first two is a ship.
Play tips and sequencing
- Choose between speed and information. The deck can lead on a cantrip to learn more or jam the fastest Aluren. Against unknown opponents and against combo, speed usually wins; against decks with permission, the extra turn of information is worth more.
- Lead on the correct tapped land. Hickory Woodlot and Havenwood Battleground come into play tapped, so they belong on the turns where nothing else is happening. Sequencing them late is how hands lose a full turn.
- Preserve the double-mana lands and treat City of Traitors as the last land you play: once another land follows, it is sacrificed.
- Cast Impulse before committing to a fragile line, not after. The information changes which line is correct, and after you have tapped low it changes nothing.
- Do not resolve Aluren without a plan against creature decks. It is symmetrical: Goblins in particular gets Lackey, Piledriver, Warchief, Matron and Sharpshooter for free too. Resolve it when the combo can start immediately.
- Use the stack aggressively. If they activate Seal of Cleansing or Disenchant on Aluren, combo in response: the enchantment is still on the battlefield while the removal is on the stack. The same applies to a Pernicious Deed activation.
- Know when infinite life is enough. Against Sligh and Burn the Soul Warden loop simply ends the game as a question, even without a kill on board.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (slightly favorable to even): Man-o'-War returns Dreadnought cleanly and Chain of Vapor answers both it and hate permanents, and the combo can win before Dreadnought connects twice. The danger is Daze and Counterspell on Aluren plus Stifle on key triggers. Never cut Man-o'-War here: it is combo piece and tempo answer in one. Xantid Swarm and Show and Tell are big post-board upgrades.
- Goblins (slightly unfavorable before boarding, close afterward): This is where Aluren's symmetry hurts most: once it resolves they cast Lackey, Piledriver, Warchief, Matron and Sharpshooter for free as well. Game one is a race. Use Man-o'-War and Chain to stop a lethal turn and resolve Aluren only when the combo starts immediately. Masticore is the post-board upgrade: it kills Lackey, Matron and Sharpshooter while presenting a 4/4.
- Sligh (even, highly draw-dependent): A pure race that the draw decides. The saving grace is that the Soul Warden loop gains unlimited life, which ends the matchup on the spot, so you do not need a kill on board to win. Their reach and your tapped depletion lands are the problem: a turn spent on a land that does nothing can simply be the game.
- Enchantress (slightly favorable): They are slower but do play Seal of Cleansing, Aura of Silence, Solitary Confinement and sometimes Sterling Grove or City of Solitude. If they activate Seal or Aura on Aluren, combo in response. Keep Chain of Vapor for Humility, Solitary Confinement or a tax effect rather than spending it early, and do not hand them free turns to assemble a draw engine.
- Landstill (favorable after boarding): Their clock is slow but the permission and enchantment removal are real. Use end-step Impulse and Intuition to tax their mana, do not walk Aluren into an obvious Counterspell, and if it resolves, continue in response to Disenchant. Casting spells under Standstill is correct when it creates a decisive combo turn. Xantid Swarm and Show and Tell swing this heavily: an attacking Swarm turns off countermagic for the turn.
- Mono Black (unfavorable): The hardest matchup, because it attacks all three pillars at once: Duress and Cabal Therapy take Aluren, Hypnotic Specter strips combo pieces at random, Wasteland and Dust Bowl hit the double-mana lands, and Engineered Plague can name Beast. Compost is the key card after board, turning their black spells into cards, and Masticore gives a second plan that kills Specter and Nantuko Shade. Do not keep a hand that loses entirely to one Duress.
- The Rock (unfavorable): Everything Aluren dislikes in one deck: Duress, Cabal Therapy, Wasteland, Dust Bowl, Pernicious Deed, Engineered Plague and a real clock. Deed is not an automatic answer, since you can combo in response to the activation; the problem is that discard and mana denial often stop you reaching that point. Compost and Masticore support a transformational plan, and keep Chain of Vapor for a Plague naming Beast.
Sideboard guide
- vs Stiflenought and blue decks: Xantid Swarm, Show and Tell, Chain of Vapor. In: four Xantid Swarm, three Show and Tell, the fourth Chain of Vapor. Out: some Flash of Insight, one or two Soul Warden, a Cloud of Faeries and a slower selection spell. Keep all four Man-o'-War, they answer Dreadnought and stay combo pieces. An attacking Swarm shuts off countermagic for the whole turn.
- vs Goblins: Masticore, Soul Warden, Chain of Vapor. In: three Masticore, the fourth Soul Warden, and a Chain of Vapor if hate permanents are likely. Out: Flash of Insight, Rishadan Cutpurse when bouncing creatures is enough, and one slow Intuition on the draw. Masticore is a support plan, not a reason to become a control deck: do not cut so much combo speed that you stop winning.
- vs Mono Black and The Rock: Compost, Masticore. In: three Compost, three Masticore. Compost turns every black spell they cast and every black permanent that dies into a card, which is the only way to win a long game against discard. Masticore kills Hypnotic Specter and Nantuko Shade and is a nonblack threat they must answer. Keep a Chain of Vapor for Engineered Plague naming Beast.
- vs Enchantress and enchantment decks: Chain of Vapor, Xantid Swarm. In: the fourth Chain of Vapor, and Xantid Swarm where their interaction is spell-based. Hold Chain for the piece that actually stops the engine, which is usually Humility or Solitary Confinement, rather than spending it on the first enchantment you see.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $400–$700. Not a cheap archetype. The cost sits in **Intuition**, **City of Traitors** and **Aluren** itself, while most of the creatures and support spells are inexpensive. **Aluren has no substitute**: a list without four copies is no longer this deck.
- Complete the creature engine first, it is the cheap half: four Cavern Harpy, four Raven Familiar, four Man-o'-War, plus Soul Warden.
- Then four Aluren, which is the one purchase that cannot be worked around.
- Build the depletion-land mana engine: Hickory Woodlot and Havenwood Battleground do the heavy lifting, and they are cheap.
- For City of Traitors, Crystal Vein is the closest stand-in, though it has to be sacrificed for the two mana. Ancient Tomb is repeatable but costs life, which matters inside Harpy loops.
- Intuition has no real replacement, so do not imitate it badly. The better budget direction is a slower City of Brass or BUG build with Sylvan Library, Wall of Blossoms and Living Wish, and the specialised sideboard last.
