Premodern Gro-a-Tog Deck Guide (2026)
Premodern Gro-a-Tog is a five-color tempo deck built around Quirion Dryad, which grows with every white, blue, black or red spell you cast. Psychatog is the second threat, and cheap cantrips, Counterspell, Gush and Daze keep both alive. Meddling Mage, Swords to Plowshares and Fire // Ice clear the way, and Armageddon ends games the deck is already winning. It shares Psychatog, Gush and Counterspell with the blue-black Psychatog deck but plays very differently. TC Decks lists 656 Gro-a-Tog decks, and on MTGDecks it holds 2.1 percent of the metagame over the last 60 days (103 lists), with a 44 percent win rate over 506 recorded matches between April 7 and October 4, 2026: strong against combo, weak against the control decks. The reference list is Daniel Sondike's second place (7-1-2) at the 109-player Sacred Torch Showdown in New York on July 25, 2026; Pascual Peña made the top four of 64 at the Liga Madrileña in September. This guide covers the plan, the key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup, sideboard plans and a budget path.
How the deck wins
- Grow a threat early. Quirion Dryad on turn two, then one or two cheap spells a turn: every cantrip and counterspell is also a +1/+1 counter. Gush and Daze are cast without paying mana and still count, so the Dryad grows on turns you spend nothing.
- Protect it and clear the way. Counterspell, Daze and Foil answer removal and sweepers, Swords to Plowshares and Fire // Ice remove blockers, and Meddling Mage names Wrath of God, Pernicious Deed or the combo piece before they draw it.
- Close with Psychatog or Armageddon. Psychatog turns a graveyard full of cantrips into damage, and Armageddon, with Gush cast in response to save two Islands, locks out an opponent who is already behind on board.

Key cards
- Quirion Dryad: The deck's best threat: a 1/1 for {1}{G} that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever you cast a white, blue, black or red spell. The counter arrives even if that spell is countered, and Gush, Daze and Foil cast without mana still count. Smother kills it at any size, because its mana value stays 2; Pyroclasm and Fire // Ice kill it while it is small, and a bounced Dryad loses its counters.
- Psychatog: The second threat and the finisher: discard a card for +1/+1, exile two cards from your graveyard for +1/+1. Two or three copies, because Quirion Dryad does most of the early work; Psychatog takes over once the graveyard is full of cantrips.
- Gush: Return two Islands instead of paying five mana and draw two cards. Free card advantage that also grows Quirion Dryad, and the trick with Armageddon: cast Gush in response and two Islands are safe in your hand. Tap the Islands for mana first.
- Meddling Mage: Two mana: name a nonland card, and spells with that name can no longer be cast. Wrath of God, Pernicious Deed, Stasis, Replenish, Survival of the Fittest or Fireblast. It does not stop abilities, so a cycled Decree of Justice or a Pernicious Deed already on the battlefield still works. In about half of the lists.
- Counterspell: In every list, almost always four. With Daze and, in two of three lists, Foil, it protects Quirion Dryad from sweepers and stops the combo decks before they start.
- Fire // Ice: Fire splits 2 damage between one or two targets, Ice taps a permanent and draws a card. Two Goblins, two mana Elves or a Hypnotic Specter for two mana, or a cantrip that taps a blocker or a land in their upkeep. Each half grows Quirion Dryad.
- Swords to Plowshares: One mana, exile any creature: Phyrexian Dreadnought, Terravore, Akroma or an opposing Psychatog. In almost every list, four copies.
- Armageddon: One in two of three main decks, more after boarding. Cast it when Quirion Dryad or Psychatog is already ahead; Gush in response saves two Islands, Mox Diamond survives it, and the opponent starts over from zero lands.
- Mox Diamond: In a third of the lists: discard a land to put it onto the battlefield, and it taps for any color. Quirion Dryad on turn one, mana that survives Armageddon, and about half the price of the deck.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or three lands with a green source, Quirion Dryad and two cheap spells: City of Brass, Island, Flooded Strand, Quirion Dryad, Counterspell, Opt and Portent is the archetypal keep.
- Two lands with cantrips and a counter: Opt, Portent and Sleight of Hand find the third land and the threat.
- Against combo, counters and Meddling Mage matter more than Quirion Dryad: keep the hand that stops their engine.
Ship
- One land, even with three cantrips: the deck needs two lands for Dryad and Counterspell.
- Hands without an Island or Flooded Strand: Gush, Daze and Foil need real Islands.
- Hands of threats without a counter or removal against control and combo.
Gro-a-Tog keeps light hands: about 20 lands plus a dozen cantrips is enough. Count Islands, not lands, and remember that City of Brass deals 1 damage to you every time it taps.
Play tips and sequencing
- Dryad first, spells after. Cast Quirion Dryad before the cantrips so every later spell grows it; with Mox Diamond it comes down on turn one.
- Spend mana at the end of their turn. Opt and Ice are instants: cast them in their end step when nothing needed countering, and the Dryad grows while Counterspell stayed up.
- Tap Islands before Gush. Gush returns two Islands as its cost, so tap them for mana first and spend it, then return them and draw two.
- Name the card that beats you. Meddling Mage on Wrath of God against control, Pernicious Deed against The Rock, Survival of the Fittest, Replenish or Aluren against combo, Fireblast against Sligh.
- Armageddon only from ahead. Count your damage: with a 4/4 Dryad and Psychatog out, Armageddon wins in two or three turns. Cast Gush in response to keep two Islands.
- Fill the graveyard before you need Psychatog. Every cantrip and counter feeds it; let Psychatog block early and attack once two or three cards in hand and a full graveyard make it lethal.
- Mind City of Brass. It deals 1 damage each time it taps; against Sligh and Goblins tap Islands for blue and save City of Brass for the colors only it makes.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (even): A tempo mirror: both decks play Counterspell, Daze and Gush, and the first threat that sticks decides it. Meddling Mage naming Phyrexian Dreadnought or Stifle takes away half of their plan, and Swords to Plowshares exiles a Dreadnought that got through, though they gain 12. Their Chain of Vapor bounces a grown Quirion Dryad, which comes back without counters, and Powder Keg at two counters kills Dryad and Mage. MTGDecks: 51 percent over 35 matches.
- Sligh (unfavorable): City of Brass and Flooded Strand cost life every game, and Price of Progress deals two damage for each of your nonbasic lands. Lightning Bolt and Grim Lavamancer kill Quirion Dryad before it grows, and Fireblast finishes. After boarding Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast counter burn for one mana, Pyroclasm kills Jackal Pup and Mogg Fanatic, and Meddling Mage can name Fireblast. MTGDecks (Burn): 40 percent over 57 matches.
- Goblins (even): Fire // Ice kills two Goblins at once, Swords to Plowshares answers Goblin Piledriver or Goblin Warchief, and after boarding Pyroclasm wipes the board while Engineered Plague naming Goblin kills every X/1 Goblin. Their Rishadan Port and Wasteland hit City of Brass and Gemstone Mine, your only sources of most colors, and Gempalm Incinerator or Goblin Sharpshooter kills Quirion Dryad before it grows. On the play, keep Daze for their turn-one Goblin Lackey; on the draw you have no Island yet, so answer it with Swords to Plowshares. MTGDecks: 47 percent over 32 matches.
- Enchantress (slightly unfavorable): Counters are the plan: Counterspell, Daze and Meddling Mage naming Solitary Confinement or Replenish stop the engine before it locks you out. Once Solitary Confinement resolves your creatures deal no damage to them, and Sterling Grove gives their other enchantments shroud against Ray of Revelation and Seal of Cleansing. Armageddon also takes Serra's Sanctum, but they rebuild with cheap enchantments. MTGDecks: 44 percent over 32 matches.
- Terrageddon (unfavorable): Both decks play Armageddon, but theirs comes with Mox Diamond, Sylvan Library and creatures that survive it: Terravore grows with every land in a graveyard, and Nimble Mongoose has shroud, so Swords and Fire // Ice cannot target it. Wasteland and Rishadan Port hit City of Brass and Gemstone Mine. Counterspell and Daze on their Armageddon, Swords on Terravore. Limited data: 29 percent over 14 matches.
- Replenish (unfavorable): Counterspell, Daze and Meddling Mage naming Replenish are the plan, since Swords and Fire // Ice have no targets, but Parallax Wave exiles your attackers and Abeyance or Decree of Silence protects the combo turn. After boarding Annul and Ray of Revelation answer Opalescence and Parallax Wave, and Duress takes Replenish before it is cast. MTGDecks: 36 percent over 25 matches.
- Landstill (unfavorable): They have more counters and the better late game. Standstill punishes a deck of cantrips, Wrath of God kills Dryad and Psychatog together, and Mishra's Factory blocks a small Dryad. Win early with a fast Quirion Dryad, cast Meddling Mage naming Standstill or Wrath, and keep Armageddon for a board lead: it also destroys their manlands. MTGDecks: 30 percent over 23 matches.
- Oath of Druids (unfavorable): Sphere of Resistance taxes every cantrip, Rishadan Port and Wasteland attack City of Brass and Gemstone Mine, and Thermokarst and Winter's Grasp finish the mana. Your creatures turn their Oath of Druids on, so counter the Oath or name it with Meddling Mage, and Swords the Terravore. Tsabo's Web after boarding stops Rishadan Port, Treetop Village and Mishra's Factory. Limited data: 36 percent over 14 matches.
- Full English Breakfast (favorable): Counters and Meddling Mage beat a combo deck that has to resolve Survival of the Fittest or Hermit Druid: Counterspell, Daze or Mage naming Survival, and Swords to Plowshares on Hermit Druid or Volrath's Shapeshifter. Their Cabal Therapy can take a counter, and Pyroclasm after boarding kills Quirion Dryad and Meddling Mage. Limited data: 67 percent over 15 matches.
- Mono Black (unfavorable): Duress and Cabal Therapy take your counters, Hypnotic Specter off Dark Ritual strips the rest, and Smother kills Quirion Dryad, Meddling Mage and Psychatog alike. Withered Wretch exiles your graveyard, which keeps Psychatog small. Fire // Ice and Swords answer Specter; Daze and Counterspell are best spent on Dark Ritual into Specter. MTGDecks: 41 percent over 34 matches.
- Stasis (unfavorable): Black Vise punishes a hand full of cantrips, and under Stasis your lands stay tapped. Gush, Daze and Foil still cost no mana, so the lock is softer against you than against most decks, but their Counterspell and Chain of Vapor win the long game. Meddling Mage naming Stasis before it lands is your best play; Ray of Revelation and Seal of Cleansing after boarding. Limited data: 30 percent over 10 matches.
- Elves (slightly unfavorable): Fire // Ice kills two mana Elves or a Priest of Titania, and Pyroclasm and Engineered Plague naming Elf after boarding sweep them, but Gaea's Cradle and Deranged Hermit outrun a deck of cantrips. Counter Survival of the Fittest and Deranged Hermit, and name Hermit with Meddling Mage. Limited data: 40 percent over 10 matches.
- Psychatog (unfavorable): Their version is built to beat yours: more counters with Foil and Accumulated Knowledge, Smother and Sickening Dreams for Quirion Dryad and Meddling Mage, Duress for your counters, and a Psychatog that eats a bigger graveyard. Win early with Dryad, name Psychatog with Meddling Mage if you hold none yourself (the Mage stops your copies too), and Swords their Tog; their Smother kills yours just as easily. Limited data: 17 percent over 18 matches.
- UG Madness (unfavorable): Their creatures outsize yours early and arrive at instant speed: Arrogant Wurm in your end step, Basking Rootwalla for free. Wild Mongrel survives Fire // Ice and Pyroclasm by discarding, and Circular Logic punishes tapped-out turns. Swords to Plowshares and Meddling Mage naming Arrogant Wurm are your best cards. MTGDecks (Madness): 14 percent over 7 matches, very limited data.
- The Rock (unfavorable): Pernicious Deed for three kills Quirion Dryad, Meddling Mage and Psychatog together, Duress and Cabal Therapy take your counters, and Ravenous Baloth outsizes Meddling Mage and a young Quirion Dryad. Meddling Mage naming Pernicious Deed, Counterspell on Deed or Recurring Nightmare, and Armageddon against a deck that needs mana for Deed are your outs. Limited data: 28 percent over 18 matches.
- Reanimator (favorable): Counterspell, Daze and Meddling Mage naming Reanimate or Exhume stop the combo, and Swords to Plowshares exiles Akroma, Angel of Wrath; Fire cannot target it (protection from red), but Ice can tap it. Their Cabal Therapy naming Counterspell and a fast Dark Ritual start are the danger. Very limited data: 71 percent over 7 matches.
- Deadguy Ale (even): Their Duress takes counters and cantrips, Gerrard's Verdict makes you discard two cards of your choice, Hypnotic Specter off Dark Ritual takes the rest, and Swords, Vindicate and Withered Wretch, which exiles your graveyard, answer Dryad and Psychatog. Fire // Ice kills Specter, Counterspell stops Phyrexian Arena, and Meddling Mage can name Vindicate. No match data.
- Tron (favorable): Armageddon destroys three Urza lands at once, and Counterspell and Daze punish their expensive turns while Quirion Dryad attacks before their mana is online. Meddling Mage names Stroke of Genius. Their Wrath of God and Masticore are the outs, and Decree of Justice cycled in your end step dodges your counters. No meaningful match data.
- Clerics (even): Fire // Ice kills two small Clerics, and after boarding Pyroclasm sweeps them while Engineered Plague naming Cleric kills the X/1s and shrinks the rest, but Rotlung Reanimator turns each dead Cleric into a 2/2 Zombie, and Duress and Cabal Therapy take your counters. Swords is best saved for Cabal Archon or Scion of Darkness. No meaningful match data.
- The Solution (even): A tempo mirror with Meddling Mage, Swords, Fire // Ice and counters on both sides. Lightning Angel outsizes Quirion Dryad until it grows, and Mother of Runes protects their creatures from Swords and Fire. Name Lightning Angel with Meddling Mage and keep Daze for it; Armageddon is the edge your deck has. No meaningful match data.
- Dromar Control (even): Their Duress, Mana Leak and Meddling Mage meet your counters, and Vindicate and Swords answer Quirion Dryad. Shadowmage Infiltrator has fear, but Psychatog, which is black, can block it. Armageddon hurts their three-color mana base more than yours, since Gush saves two Islands. No match data.
- Aluren (favorable): Counterspell, Daze and Meddling Mage naming Aluren stop the engine, and once Aluren resolves their creatures have flash, so counter it on the stack. Duress after boarding takes it from their hand. Very limited data.
- Zombies (even): Carnophage and Sarcomancy race a small Quirion Dryad, and Lord of the Undead pumps the team. Fire // Ice kills one 2/2 Zombie or two Shepherds of Rot, Pyroclasm sweeps the 2/2s after boarding, and Engineered Plague naming Zombie shrinks the whole team. Their Duress and Cabal Therapy take counters, and Withered Wretch keeps Psychatog small. No match data.
- MUD (even): Winter Orb and Tangle Wire slow you less than most decks: Gush, Daze and Foil cost no mana, though their Sphere of Resistance adds {1} to each. Counter Tinker and Winter Orb, name Tinker with Meddling Mage, and bring Seal of Cleansing, Disenchant and Tsabo's Web, which keeps Rishadan Port tapped. Triskelion kills Meddling Mage and a Quirion Dryad that has not grown yet. MTGDecks (Tinker Welder): 43 percent over 7 matches, very limited data.
- White Weenie (favorable): Fire // Ice kills two of their X/1s, Swords and Meddling Mage handle the rest, and Counterspell and Daze stop Armageddon. Silver Knight and Soltari Priest survive Fire // Ice and Pyroclasm (protection from red), and the Soltari attack past Quirion Dryad with shadow, so Swords those first. Very limited data: 100 percent over 8 matches.
- BW Control (unfavorable): Wrath of God kills Quirion Dryad, Meddling Mage and Psychatog together, Duress takes your counters, Gerrard's Verdict makes you discard two cards of your choice, and Decree of Justice cycled in your end step cannot be countered. Meddling Mage naming Wrath of God and Armageddon are your best cards: BW Control needs six lands for Decree and seven for Eternal Dragon. Limited data: 25 percent over 12 matches.
- Pit Rack (slightly unfavorable): Their discard strips your counters and cantrips, Bottomless Pit takes a random card every upkeep, and Smother kills Quirion Dryad, Meddling Mage and Psychatog alike. Refill with Gush and grow the Dryad fast. Expect Dystopia and Perish after boarding. Very limited data.
- Rebels (slightly favorable): Fire // Ice kills two of their X/1 searchers at once, and Quirion Dryad outgrows their chain. Their searches dodge Counterspell, Daze and Foil, so counter Lin Sivvi when she is cast and keep Swords to Plowshares for the searchers. Armageddon on a turn they are tapped out usually decides the game. No meaningful match data.
- Contamination (slightly unfavorable): Counter Contamination at all costs: under the lock, Quirion Dryad, Psychatog, Meddling Mage, Counterspell and Swords to Plowshares need colors your lands no longer make, and only Gush, Daze, Foil and Mox Diamond can still be cast. Their Smother kills Quirion Dryad at any size. No meaningful match data.
- Turbo Lands (even): Glacial Chasm prevents all damage from Quirion Dryad and Psychatog, and only Armageddon removes it, so fight their spells: counter Exploration and Horn of Greed, and name Seismic Assault with Meddling Mage. Expect Pyroblast after boarding. No match data.
- Fluctuator (favorable): Counterspell, Foil and Meddling Mage stop Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned, and Quirion Dryad gives you a fast clock. Their Expunge kills Quirion Dryad or Meddling Mage but not Psychatog. Annul and Disenchant after boarding answer Fluctuator; expect Misdirection and Miscalculation. No match data.
- RG Zoo (unfavorable): Zoo plays Sligh's burn with bigger creatures: Lightning Bolt and Grim Lavamancer kill your Quirion Dryad before it grows, City of Brass and Flooded Strand cost you life, and Elephant tokens outsize your early board. Swords to Plowshares, Counterspell and Daze trade one for one, and Meddling Mage naming Call of the Herd stops it from hand and graveyard alike. After boarding bring Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast and Pyroclasm; expect Pyroblast and Red Elemental Blast for Counterspell and Psychatog. Very limited data.
Sideboard guide
- vs Sligh and Goblins: Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Pyroclasm. Hydroblast, in four of five sideboards, and Blue Elemental Blast counter a red spell or destroy a red permanent for one mana: Fireblast, Sulfuric Vortex, Siege-Gang Commander, or Goblin Piledriver while it is still a spell (on the battlefield it has protection from blue). Pyroclasm, in three of four sideboards, kills Jackal Pup, Mogg Fanatic and every small Goblin. Out: Armageddon and Psychatog, which is too slow against burn.
- vs Elves, Zombies and Clerics: Engineered Plague, Pyroclasm. Engineered Plague, in half of the sideboards, names Elf, Zombie or Cleric and shrinks the whole team; Pyroclasm kills everything with toughness 2 or less. Your own Pyroclasm is red, so it grows Quirion Dryad first: a Dryad with one counter already survives it. Out: Armageddon and Sleight of Hand.
- vs Enchantress, Replenish, Oath of Druids and Stasis: Ray of Revelation, Seal of Cleansing, Disenchant, Annul. Ray of Revelation, in three of four sideboards, destroys an enchantment and can be cast again from the graveyard for {G}. Seal of Cleansing waits on the battlefield, Disenchant also hits artifacts, and Annul counters an artifact or enchantment spell for one mana. Out: Swords to Plowshares and Fire // Ice, which have few targets; against Oath of Druids keep Swords for Terravore.
- vs Landstill, Psychatog, BW Control and The Rock: Duress, Armageddon, Call of the Herd. Duress, in a third of the sideboards, takes Standstill, Counterspell, Wrath of God or Pernicious Deed before your threats land. A second Armageddon punishes decks that need lands for counters and manlands, and Call of the Herd adds two threats that survive one sweeper. Out: Fire // Ice and Sleight of Hand.
- vs MUD, Goblins and Oath of Druids: Tsabo's Web. Tsabo's Web draws a card and stops every land with a non-mana ability from untapping: Rishadan Port, Mishra's Factory, Treetop Village and Dust Bowl stay tapped. It is in a third of the sideboards. Out: Sleight of Hand.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $520–$2,150. The reference list (Daniel Sondike, second of 109 at the Sacred Torch Showdown, 25 July) costs about $2,150 with its sideboard at the Premodern-era printings tracked here. A single Mox Diamond is about $1,110 of that, four Flooded Strand about $500, four Meddling Mage about $150 and four City of Brass about $140. The engine, Quirion Dryad, Psychatog, Gush, Counterspell, Daze and the cantrips, costs about $70 for every copy in the list.
- Start with the engine: Quirion Dryad, Psychatog, Gush, Counterspell, Daze, the cantrips, Swords to Plowshares and Fire // Ice.
- Mox Diamond is optional: two of three lists play none. Without it, with Islands and a Plains instead of Flooded Strand and with Annul instead of Tsabo's Web in the sideboard, the deck costs about $520.
- City of Brass and Gemstone Mine are not optional: they make the green, red and black for Quirion Dryad, Fire and Psychatog.
- Upgrade in this order: Flooded Strand first, Mox Diamond last.
