Premodern archetypes that play Exalted Angel
- Deadguy Ale: Cast face down as a 2/2 for three mana and turned face up for {2}{W}{W}, usually on turn four, it is a 4/5 flier that gains you life equal to the damage it deals, so an unblocked attack moves the life totals eight points apart. You can turn it face up whenever you have priority, even in response, so keep {2}{W}{W} open when they aim burn or Smother at the face-down 2/2. It is the main way back against burn and fast aggro, unless Sulfuric Vortex stops the lifegain.
- The Solution: Cast it face down for {3} on turn three and turn it face up for {2}{W}{W} on turn four. It is a 4/5 flier that gains you life whenever it deals damage, so each attack swings the race by 8, unless Sulfuric Vortex is out or Stifle counters the trigger. Face down it is a colorless 2/2 with mana value 0, which Smother kills.
- Dromar Control: In every list, usually three: cast it face down as a 2/2 for {3}, then turn it face up for {2}{W}{W} whenever you have priority, which does not use the stack, into a 4/5 flier that gains you life equal to any damage it deals, blocking included. Against red decks and Goblins the lifegain often decides the race, but burn kills it while it is face down, and Sulfuric Vortex stops the lifegain.
- White Weenie: Cast face down on turn three for {3} and turned up for {2}{W}{W} on turn four, it attacks as a 4/5 flier and gains you as much life as the damage it deals, so each hit swings a race by eight life. Turning a morph face up does not use the stack, so nothing can respond to it.
- BW Control: A 4/5 flier that gains you the damage it deals. Cast it face down for three and turn it up for {2}{W}{W}; turning a morph face up does not use the stack, so nobody can respond. After a Wrath of God it is often the only creature left, and it ends a game in five attacks while undoing their damage.
Sideboard plans with Exalted Angel
- Replenish vs. Decks that board enchantment removal and graveyard hate.
- Landstill vs. Combo and creature decks. Exalted Angel is in about three of five sideboards and half the main decks: cast it face down for {3} and turn it face up for {2}{W}{W}, which is not a spell, and it gains you life whenever it deals damage.
- Rebels vs. Landstill, BW Control, Tron, Psychatog and Dromar Control. The reference list keeps a third Standstill and an Exalted Angel for the control decks. Exalted Angel can be cast face down for {3} and turned face up for {2}{W}{W}, which cannot be countered, into a 4/5 flier that gains you life equal to the damage it deals.
