Premodern Clerics Deck Guide (2026)
How to play Premodern Clerics: a mono-black tribal deck that sacrifices three of its own priests to Dark Supplicant and puts Scion of Darkness straight onto the battlefield, as early as turn two. This guide covers the consensus decklist, the Supplicant and Rotlung Reanimator engine, mulligans, how to play through Engineered Plague, every major matchup, the sideboard and a realistic budget path.
How the deck wins
- The combo is one card deep: Dark Supplicant taps and sacrifices three Clerics to search your graveyard, hand or library for Scion of Darkness and put it onto the battlefield. Supplicant is itself a Cleric, so you only need two more bodies, and Priest of Gix adds three black mana as it enters, which is how a Ritual opener can present the Avatar on turn two.
- The sacrifices are close to free because Rotlung Reanimator makes a 2/2 Zombie every time a Cleric dies, including itself. Note the tokens are plain Zombies and not Clerics, so Cabal Archon and Dark Supplicant cannot eat them, but Cabal Therapy flashback can.
- The backup plan is drain. Cabal Archon converts each spare Cleric into two life lost and two gained at instant speed, which wins through blockers, through Solitary Confinement and through a burn race, while Duress and Cabal Therapy clear the way.

Key cards
- Dark Supplicant: The engine: tap and sacrifice three Clerics to put Scion of Darkness onto the battlefield from graveyard, hand or library. It counts itself, but it has to survive a turn first, which is what removal and Engineered Plague punish.
- Scion of Darkness: The payoff, correctly played as a single copy: a 6/6 trampler that steals a creature out of the defending player's graveyard on every connection, and cycles for three when you draw it naturally.
- Rotlung Reanimator: Makes every Cleric death, including its own, into a 2/2 black Zombie token. The tokens are Zombies and not Clerics, so they attack and block but cannot be fed to Archon or Supplicant.
- Cabal Archon: The reach engine: one black mana and a Cleric drains for two and gains two at instant speed, so the deck can win without ever attacking, which is why prison and lifegain decks struggle.
- Priest of Gix: Adds three black mana as it enters, so it costs nothing net and turns into extra Cleric count plus a whole extra spell that turn. It is the reason the fastest draws are so fast.
- Dark Ritual: The accelerant that chains Priests together: Swamp into Ritual into Priest into Priest can deploy three Clerics and a Supplicant on turn one.
- Withered Wretch: A Cleric body and maindeck graveyard hate in one: it exiles a card for one mana, blanking Reanimator, Recurring Nightmare and flashback. Careful, it can exile your own Scion by accident.
- Cabal Therapy: Strips a card for one mana, then flashes back off any creature sacrifice. With Rotlung out, sacrificing a Cleric refunds a 2/2, so the second strip is close to free.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or more lands plus two of Priest of Gix, Rotlung Reanimator, Dark Supplicant or Cabal Archon: that is a functioning board.
- Swamp plus Dark Ritual plus Priest of Gix, even on two lands: the deck's best opener.
- Against Stiflenought, Enchantress, Replenish or Reanimator, any hand with Duress or Cabal Therapy plus a threat.
Ship
- Hands whose only Cleric is Dark Supplicant: on its own it does nothing, it needs two more bodies.
- Zero or one land without Dark Ritual, and five-land hands with a single threat.
- Scion of Darkness in the opener with no Supplicant, unless the rest of the hand is excellent, since you can only cycle it.
The curve tops out at Graveborn Muse, so three lands is plenty. What loses games is Cleric count, not land count: count how many bodies the hand actually produces before you keep it.
Play tips and sequencing
- Lead Duress over a blind Cabal Therapy where you can: Duress shows you the whole hand, which makes both halves of Therapy fully informed afterwards.
- Deploy Dark Supplicant a turn before you intend to fire it, since it has to tap, and count your Clerics first. Fire the activation in their draw step or before they untap with removal mana up.
- Choose Therapy flashback fuel deliberately: sacrificing a Cleric refunds a Zombie through Rotlung Reanimator, while sacrificing a token gets the strip but no replacement. A spent Priest of Gix has already banked its value and is the ideal fuel.
- Assume Engineered Plague naming Cleric after boarding: it kills Dark Supplicant and Priest of Gix outright and shrinks the rest. Hold the second Supplicant back rather than walking both into it, and remember the Zombie tokens are untouched, so pivot to the token beatdown.
- Unearth returns anything with mana value three or less, so it rebuilds Rotlung after a sweeper or supplies the third Cleric to finish an activation, and it cycles for two when dead.
- Hold one mana up for Withered Wretch rather than exiling on empty: it answers Living Death, Recurring Nightmare, Exhume and every flashback card at instant speed.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (favorable): Seven discard spells attack a two-card combo, and Phyrexian Dreadnought is a one-mana nonblack creature, so Smother, Snuff Out and Diabolic Edict all answer it cleanly.
- Goblins (favorable): Game one is a real race, but Engineered Plague naming Goblin after boarding is close to a hard lock.
- Sligh (favorable): Cabal Archon gains two per activation, which outpaces burn, and Priests chump freely. Watch your own Graveborn Muse life loss.
- Enchantress (even): Solitary Confinement blanks attacks but not Archon drain. Dystopia forces a sacrifice every upkeep and Gloom taxes their white spells.
- Landstill (even): Wrath of God and Powder Keg are devastating against a deck that must commit bodies, but discard strips them and Archon drains through an empty board.
- Elves (favorable): Perish destroys their whole board and Engineered Plague naming Elf compounds it, while Withered Wretch fights Survival recursion.
- Mono Black (even): Symmetric discard, and Snuff Out cannot touch their black creatures. Whoever draws Engineered Plague naming Cleric wins the swing.
- UG Madness (favorable): Perish is a blowout after boarding, and Withered Wretch exiles Roar of the Wurm and Deep Analysis before they flash back.
- The Rock (unfavorable): Pernicious Deed at two or three counters erases the entire board including the tokens, and they can bring Engineered Plague on top.
- Reanimator (favorable): Maindeck Withered Wretch plus seven discard spells attack both halves of their plan before they can deploy.
- Tron (even): Their sweepers punish a deck that commits bodies, but your discard has time to work against a slow control deck.
- The Solution (even): Efficient removal and fliers punish your key creatures, but they run few sweepers and Archon drains under a Lightning Angel.
- Dromar Control (unfavorable): Meddling Mage names Dark Supplicant, a flipped Exalted Angel outruns Archon drain, and as a black deck they have the cleanest access to Engineered Plague.
- Deadguy Ale (even before boarding, unfavorable afterward): They save Swords to Plowshares for Rotlung Reanimator and Cabal Archon rather than the small bodies. After board Engineered Plague naming Cleric and Wrath of God are excellent for them, with one quirk: Plague also shrinks their own Withered Wretch, which is a Zombie Cleric. Rotlung means a sweeper often leaves a board behind anyway.
- Aluren (even to slightly favorable): The creature clock plus Cabal Therapy, Duress and Withered Wretch attacks the enchantment and the graveyard at once, and Engineered Plague naming Beast after board means a resolved Aluren is not safe. Their answers are Masticore against small Clerics and Compost against the black spells.
Sideboard guide
- vs Goblins, Elves and the mirror: Engineered Plague. Naming Goblin or Elf is close to a lock, and in the mirror naming Cleric kills their Supplicant and Priest of Gix outright. Their Zombie tokens survive a Cleric naming, so plan for that.
- vs Opposing Engineered Plague, and Sligh: Bad Moon. The dedicated anti-hate card: plus one and one to every black creature undoes a Cleric-naming Plague entirely and pumps the Zombie tokens.
- vs Enchantress, Landstill and white decks: Gloom. White spells and the activated abilities of white enchantments cost three more, which specifically taxes Solitary Confinement and Sterling Grove.
- vs Enchantress and The Rock: Dystopia. Forces a green or white sacrifice every upkeep and you own none, so it is entirely one-sided. The cumulative upkeep is a clock on you too.
- vs Green creature decks: Perish. Destroys every green creature with no regeneration, and you have no green permanents to lose.
- vs Control and sweeper decks: Silent Specter. A 4/4 flier that strips two cards per hit and, crucially, is not a Cleric, so an Engineered Plague naming Cleric does not touch it.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $180–$400. The maindeck without the utility lands is a genuinely cheap deck, but roughly half of it is four **Rotlung Reanimator** (one Onslaught printing, around $18 each). The full 75 climbs because of the sideboard, mainly Dystopia and Powder Keg.
- Swap Rishadan Port for Mishra's Factory: a handful of lists already do it and it saves the most money in the manabase.
- Cut Dystopia and Powder Keg from the sideboard for Perish, Nausea and Diabolic Edict, which cost cents and cover most of the same ground.
- Swap Graveborn Muse for Phyrexian Arena or Shepherd of Rot if the life loss or the price bothers you.
- Do not skip Rotlung Reanimator: there is no substitute and the deck does not function without it. The same goes for Cabal Therapy and the sideboard Engineered Plague.
- Avoid the trap manabase: City of Traitors and Volrath's Stronghold cost several times the rest of the deck combined, and Swamps plus Mishra's Factory play almost as well.
