How to play Premodern The Solution: a red-white-blue aggro-control deck that names the opponent's best card with Meddling Mage, protects its threats with Mother of Runes, and closes with a hasty Lightning Angel plus burn. The name goes back to Zvi Mowshowitz's Pro Tour Tokyo 2001 deck. How the deck wins
- This is tempo, not control. Meddling Mage is a 2/2 for two that also strips the opponent's single most important card, and every turn they spend digging for an answer is a turn your clock runs.
- Lightning Angel is the engine: a 3/4 flier with haste and vigilance, so it deals damage the turn it lands, still blocks a Nantuko Shade or a Wild Mongrel, and survives Pyroclasm and Fire. Mother of Runes is what makes it stick, blanking targeted removal and winning every combat.
- Exalted Angel is the pivot against aggro: morphed on turn three and flipped on turn four, a 4/5 flying lifelinker makes the burn matchups close to unraceable. Against slower decks, burn simply becomes reach.

Key cards
- Lightning Angel: A 3/4 flier with haste and vigilance for four: it starts attacking immediately, still holds the ground, and dodges the format's common sweepers at four toughness.
- Meddling Mage: Pre-emptive, permanent disruption on a 2/2 body: naming correctly is the deck's skill-testing decision, and unlike a counterspell it works while you are tapped out.
- Mother of Runes: Repeatable protection from a colour, which blanks targeted removal and turns every combat into a favourable trade. Hold the untap for their removal rather than activating on your own turn.
- Swords to Plowshares: One mana to exile anything permanently: the clean answer to Phyrexian Dreadnought, a flipped Exalted Angel or a reanimated fatty, cheap enough to double-spell.
- Lightning Bolt: Kills Birds of Paradise, Goblin Lackey, Wild Mongrel and Priest of Titania for one mana early, then converts into the last three points of reach.
- Fire // Ice: Modal and always live: Fire two-for-ones a Goblins or Elves board, Ice taps a blocker or a key land like Serra's Sanctum on their upkeep and replaces itself.
- Exalted Angel: A turn-three morph that flips for four into a 4/5 flying lifelinker, swinging life totals by eight a turn and winning any race against red or green aggro.
- Fact or Fiction: The card-advantage payoff for a deck that already wants to keep mana open on the opponent's turn.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or three lands producing at least two of your three colours plus a one or two mana play. A Flooded Strand with a fetchable basic is worth more than its raw land count suggests.
- Any hand with Meddling Mage plus interaction is close to an automatic keep.
- Two-landers with Impulse or Portent to find the third.
Ship
- One-landers always, and five-landers with no early play.
- Colour-screwed hands that cannot make white and blue by turn two, since Swords and Mage are your on-curve interaction.
- All-reactive hands with no clock: this deck loses the long games it does not pressure.
You are the beatdown far more often than the card quality suggests. A hand that cannot apply pressure by turn four is usually a mulligan, even if it holds good cards.
Play tips and sequencing
- Name the card that beats you, not the card that is merely good: Wrath of God against control, Phyrexian Dreadnought against Stiflenought, Solitary Confinement or Parallax Wave against Enchantress, Survival of the Fittest against Elves, Pernicious Deed against The Rock, Exhume against Reanimator, Standstill against Landstill.
- Never activate Mother of Runes on your own turn unless you are forcing damage through: hold the untap for their removal spell and activate in response, so you do not telegraph the colour.
- Burn is removal early and reach late. Once the opponent is at six or less with Lightning Angel on board, Bolt and Fire are a two-card kill and should be held rather than spent on a 2/2.
- Tap out for Lightning Angel on turn four against anything slower than you: the haste damage is worth more than a held counterspell. Hold counters only when you are already ahead or against combo.
- Miscalculation cycles for two when it is dead, while Mana Leak taxes harder on turns two through four. Pick by expected matchups rather than playing a mix of both.
- Sequence your painlands so the colour you need next turn is already available, and fetch basics when you can afford to. Against Sligh, this single skill decides the matchup.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (favorable): Meddling Mage names Phyrexian Dreadnought, Swords to Plowshares exiles it cleanly if it lands, and Annul answers the cheap enablers.
- Goblins (even): Pyroclasm and Hydroblast are devastating after boarding, but a turn-one Goblin Lackey still steals games while your manabase bleeds you.
- Sligh (unfavorable): Your own painlands and fetches hand them free damage. The large red sideboard makes games two and three close, but game one is bad.
- Enchantress (even): You must be the aggressor and name a lock piece correctly. Bolt kills Argothian Enchantress to deny draws, but a resolved Solitary Confinement blanks your deck.
- Landstill (favorable): You are the aggro deck, Standstill is close to uncastable against you, and Mother of Runes dodges their spot removal.
- Elves (even): Hibernation after they overcommit is a blowout and Pyroclasm sweeps the dorks, but an unanswered Survival of the Fittest out-grinds you.
- Mono Black (even): Their edicts go around Mother of Runes and Engineered Plague naming Wizard kills Meddling Mage, but your fliers outclass their ground.
- UG Madness (even): Bolt and Fire trade efficiently, but Roar of the Wurm tokens outclass your ground and Wonder lets their team fly over Lightning Angel.
- The Rock (unfavorable): Pernicious Deed sweeps your whole board, edicts ignore Mother of Runes, and Recurring Nightmare wins any long game. Naming Deed is close to mandatory.
- Reanimator (favorable): Tormod's Crypt, a Mage on Exhume, counters on the reanimation spell and Swords on the fatty are four independent answers.
- Tron (favorable): Your clock badly outpaces theirs and Meddling Mage names Decree of Justice or Wrath of God.
- Dromar Control (even): The sibling build: you have the faster clock and the burn reach, they have Vindicate, Wrath of God and Shadowmage Infiltrator card advantage.
- Clerics (favorable): Their bodies are small ground creatures that Pyroclasm and Fire sweep while Lightning Angel flies over. Name Dark Supplicant.
- Deadguy Ale (even): Meddling Mage naming Swords or Vindicate shuts off their answers, and Mother of Runes protects your creatures, so removing Mother before she is active is their priority. They will avoid overextending into Wrath of God and keep Decree of Justice as the finisher. Dystopia comes in after board.
- Aluren (even): Meddling Mage, Mother of Runes, Counterspell, Swords and Disenchant are all live, and a Mage naming Aluren is close to game over, except that Show and Tell goes around it. Man-o'-War and Chain answer the Mage. Note that Meddling Mage can be cast through their own Aluren, so they will start the combo the moment it resolves.
Sideboard guide
- vs Sligh, Goblins and burn: Circle of Protection: Red, Warmth. The dedicated red hate that turns the worst matchup around after boarding, alongside Hydroblast.
- vs Goblins and Elves: Pyroclasm. Sweeps the go-wide starts, and Mother of Runes can protect one of your own creatures from it.
- vs Reanimator and graveyard decks: Tormod's Crypt, Phyrexian Furnace. Free graveyard hate, so you keep interaction up on the same turn.
- vs Blue decks and Stiflenought: Pyroblast, Red Elemental Blast, Annul. Answers Stifle, Standstill and the artifact half of the Dreadnought combo.
- vs Enchantress and Replenish: Cleansing Meditation, Seal of Cleansing. The answer to a resolved enchantment lock, and the card most often missing from otherwise good lists.
- vs Creature decks: Worship, Enlightened Tutor. Worship with Mother of Runes is close to a hard lock, and Enlightened Tutor is the glue that makes a sideboard of singletons function.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $90–$250. Around $230 as registered, and the expensive part is the manabase and the sideboard, not the business spells. **Lightning Angel** costs cents and **Meddling Mage** and **Exalted Angel** are a euro or two each.
- Cut the four Flooded Strand for basics plus another painland: Adarkar Wastes, Shivan Reef and Battlefield Forge are all near-free. That alone is the biggest saving.
- Replace Reflecting Pool and City of Brass with Grand Coliseum, which is a fine substitute at a fraction of the price.
- Drop Enlightened Tutor and build the sideboard out of two-ofs instead of singletons.
- Swap the expensive hate pieces down: Phyrexian Furnace for a second Tormod's Crypt, Spiritual Focus for Circle of Protection: Red.
- Keep Mother of Runes at full price: it is in nineteen of twenty lists and cutting it changes what the deck is.
