Premodern Elves Deck Guide (2026)
How to play Premodern Elves: a mono-green swarm deck that turns one-mana Elves into overwhelming mana with Priest of Titania and Gaea's Cradle, tutors silver bullets with Survival of the Fittest, and kills from nowhere with Kamahl's Overrun or a Natural Order Phantom Nishoba. This guide covers the game plan, key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup and a full sideboard plan.
How the deck wins
- The mana comes first: Llanowar Elves and Fyndhorn Elves into Priest of Titania and Gaea's Cradle produces absurd amounts of green mana by turn three. Quirion Ranger and Wirewood Symbiote untap the Priest to double it, and Multani's Acolyte keeps the cards flowing.
- Survival of the Fittest converts spare Elves into whatever the game needs: Squee, Goblin Nabob makes every activation free card advantage, Anger gives the army haste, Nantuko Vigilante and Masticore answer permanents, Deranged Hermit floods the board.
- Then one big turn ends it: Kamahl, Fist of Krosa turns Cradle mana into an instant Overrun, or Natural Order trades a spare Elf for Phantom Nishoba against removal and burn. Tangle Wire buys the turn you need against anyone trying to go over the top.

Key cards
- Gaea's Cradle: The engine land: one green mana per creature you control, which in this deck means four or more by turn three. Everything the deck does scales off it; a second one is never dead thanks to Quirion Ranger.
- Priest of Titania: Cradle on legs: one mana per Elf, counting both players. With an untapper she is the deck's biggest mana source and the first thing removal aims at, which is exactly why the deck plays so many redundant dorks.
- Survival of the Fittest: The toolbox: discard a creature, tutor a creature, at instant speed. It fixes every draw, finds the silver bullet for any board, and with Squee in the bin it is a free extra card every single turn.
- Squee, Goblin Nabob: The Survival battery: he returns to your hand every upkeep, so each Survival activation costs nothing. The engine that lets a fair green deck out-grind control.
- Wirewood Symbiote: The glue: bounce an Elf to untap any creature, once each turn. Untaps Priest for mana, rebuys Multani's Acolyte draws and Deranged Hermit squirrels, and dodges removal on the way.
- Quirion Ranger: A one-drop that returns a Forest to untap a creature: more Priest activations, pseudo-vigilance for attackers, and fuel for hands that missed a land drop. Quietly one of the most skill-testing cards in the deck.
- Deranged Hermit: Five power across five bodies for five mana (echo aside): a board that blocks a horde, powers Cradle and Priest, and turns any Kamahl activation lethal. The premier Survival target when you just need bodies.
- Kamahl, Fist of Krosa: The finisher: with Cradle online his Overrun activation turns a board of 1/1 dorks into twenty-plus trample damage out of nowhere. Most opponents die the turn after they thought they had stabilised.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- One-drop Elf, second land or another dork, and something to do with the mana (Survival, Acolyte, Hermit): the standard curve-out.
- Survival of the Fittest plus two lands and any creature is always a keep: the enchantment fixes everything else.
- Forest-light hands with Quirion Ranger are better than they look: the Ranger rebuys your land drop.
Ship
- Hands without a one- or two-mana play: the deck's power is its speed, and a slow start wastes it.
- All-payoff hands (Hermit, Kamahl, Natural Order) with no dorks to power them out.
- One-Forest hands without Ranger or a second land: losing the only Forest to removal or Wasteland ends the game.
Count your turn-three mana: a keepable hand makes five or more with a Priest or Cradle involved. The deck mulligans well because every Elf replaces another; payoff-heavy hands are the trap.
Play tips and sequencing
- Lead one-drops before Priest of Titania: her mana scales with the Elves already on the table, and baiting removal with lesser dorks first protects her.
- Survival with Squee in the graveyard is a free card every turn: set it up early, and tutor at instant speed in their end step whenever possible.
- Wirewood Symbiote picks up value on the way: bounce Multani's Acolyte to draw its card again, or rescue an echo creature (Hermit, Granger) whose upkeep you no longer want to pay.
- Play around sweepers with echo math and Caller of the Claw: against Wrath of God and Pernicious Deed, keep a Survival package in hand rather than the whole team on the table.
- Tangle Wire on a developed board is nearly one-sided: your dorks tap for mana in response and Quirion Ranger untaps the important piece.
- Natural Order usually fetches Phantom Nishoba against burn and aggro; against control it is often better to just present Kamahl mana and make every counter answer twenty damage.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (favorable): Their own guide calls this their bad matchup: you go wide, chump the 12/12 forever and combo-kill past it. Tangle Wire and Null Rod after board make their tempo game embarrassing.
- UG Madness (favorable): The Madness primers put this near 80/20 for Elves: their fair threats cannot race your mana engine, and Survival out-values their graveyard grind. Only a fast Wonder air force steals games.
- Goblins (even): Two tribal swarms, but theirs carries removal: Gempalm Incinerator picks off Priest and the untappers on sight. Hermit squirrels block the ground; win with Overrun before Ringleader value takes over.
- Sligh (unfavorable): An army of one-toughness dorks against a deck of two-damage burn spells. Natural Order into Phantom Nishoba is the great equaliser; post-board Caller of the Claw rebuilds after their sweep effects.
- Enchantress (even): A pure race: your goldfish is faster, their lock is total once it lands. Kill before Solitary Confinement plus Elephant Grass assembles; post-board Harmonic Convergence puts the whole prison back on top of their library.
- Landstill (even to favorable): Draw-go hates a deck that rebuilds for one mana: they must Wrath early and often, and Squee-Survival grinds through every one-for-one. Play around Powder Keg at one, and Tangle Wire their untap steps.
- Mono Black (even to favorable): Game one their one-for-one removal loses to the swarm. After board Engineered Plague on Elf is their whole plan: fetch non-Elf bodies (Hermit's squirrels, Nishoba, Masticore) and make Plague a dead card.
- Replenish (even): A race with little interaction either way. Your clock is a turn faster on average; their Opalescence boards block. Post-board Naturalize, Uktabi Orangutan and Tormod's Crypt turn it into a real fight.
- The Rock (even to unfavorable): Pernicious Deed is the problem: one activation eats the whole board for two mana. Bank threats in hand, lean on Survival value and echo creatures, and respect Plague plus Plague Spitter after board.
Sideboard guide
- vs Blue decks (Landstill, Stiflenought): Xantid Swarm, Tangle Wire, Null Rod. Xantid Swarm attacks and shuts their counters off for the turn; Tangle Wire steals the tempo back; Null Rod switches off Dreadnought, Masticore mirrors and Powder Keg alike.
- vs Enchantress and enchantment prison: Harmonic Convergence, Naturalize, Uktabi Orangutan. Convergence bounces every enchantment to the top of their library in one spell: the prison disappears and they redraw it card by card. Naturalize and the Orangutan answer single pieces on sight.
- vs Graveyard decks: Tormod's Crypt. Free graveyard removal for Replenish piles and Reanimator. Mind your own Squee and Anger when you bring it in: crack it on their yard, not yours.
- vs Sweepers and attrition (The Rock, Landstill): Caller of the Claw, Elvish Scrapper. Caller of the Claw flashed in after a Wrath or Deed rebuilds the board instantly with a Bear per creature that died. The Scrapper is a Survival-fetchable artifact answer.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $700–$1,500+. Two Reserved List playsets carry the price: Gaea's Cradle above all, plus Survival of the Fittest. The Elves themselves cost pocket change, and the deck functions (at reduced power) on basic Forests while you collect the lands.
- Start with the Elf core: Llanowar, Fyndhorn, Priest of Titania, Quirion Ranger, Wirewood Symbiote and Multani's Acolyte are all cheap.
- Add the toolbox creatures (Squee, Anger, Nantuko Vigilante, Deranged Hermit, Kamahl) and Natural Order with Phantom Nishoba.
- Add the Survival of the Fittest playset: the engine that turns the deck from a swarm into a machine.
- Collect Gaea's Cradle one at a time: each copy is a big power jump and four is the endpoint.
- The sideboard (Crypt, Xantid Swarm, Null Rod, Convergence) costs very little.
