Premodern archetypes that play Black Vise
- Sligh: One mana: at the beginning of the chosen opponent's upkeep it deals damage equal to the number of cards in their hand minus four. It punishes decks that hold their cards, such as Stiflenought, Landstill, Psychatog and Stasis, and does little against creature decks that empty their hand. It is colorless, so Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast and Circle of Protection: Red can't stop it, though artifact removal can. The Black Vise build nearly always plays four; Jackal Pup lists almost never play it.
- Stasis: As it enters you choose an opponent, and in each of their upkeeps it deals damage equal to the number of cards in their hand minus four; this is how the deck wins. Under Stasis a hand of seven means three damage per Vise, and several Vises stack. Weak against Sligh, Goblins and Elves until the lock is in place.
