Premodern Rebels Deck Guide (2026)
Premodern Rebels is a white creature deck that searches its threats straight onto the battlefield. Ramosian Sergeant, Defiant Falcon and Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero each find the next Rebel in the chain, so every searcher that survives turns spare mana into another creature, at instant speed and without casting a spell. The most played build today adds blue for Counterspell, Mana Leak and Standstill. It is a fringe deck: TC Decks lists 110 Rebels decks, and MTGDecks recorded 11 lists over the last six months and one over the last 60 days, with only five recorded matches between April 8 and October 5, 2026, far too few for a win rate. The reference list is Gabriel Frei's Counter Rebels, which won the 24-player seventh stage of the Liga Paulista in São Paulo on June 7, 2026; Murilo Orthusk won the 40-player Monthly Webcam Brazil February event with a mono-white build, and Stefano Bonadè finished second of 53 at the PM Series in Turin in January with a green-white one. This guide covers the plan, the key cards, mulligans, sequencing, every major matchup, sideboard plans and a budget path.
How the deck wins
- Keep one searcher alive. Ramosian Sergeant on turn one, Mother of Runes or a counterspell to protect it, Lin Sivvi on turn three. A searcher that untaps with mana behind it adds a creature every turn, and the opponent needs a card for each one.
- Search at the end of their turn. Hold up Counterspell, Mana Leak or Swords to Plowshares; if you do not need them, spend the mana on a search in their end step. The Rebel arrives without being cast, so Counterspell cannot touch it and Standstill does not notice, and it is ready to attack or tap in your turn.
- Climb the chain and close. Lin Sivvi for X finds Defiant Vanguard, the Gliders, Ramosian Sky Marshal or Jhovall Queen, and Shared Triumph naming Rebel makes the team bigger. Fliers and Mishra's Factory finish the game while Whipcorder taps their best blocker.

Key cards
- Lin Sivvi, Defiant Hero: Three mana, a 1/3 legend that searches for a Rebel with mana value X or less for {X} and a tap and puts it onto the battlefield: with four mana that is Defiant Vanguard and one to spare, with six it is Jhovall Queen. Her second ability, {3}, puts a Rebel card from your graveyard on the bottom of your library, so the Rebels they kill become search targets again. She dies to Lightning Bolt and Smother; keep Mother of Runes ready for her.
- Ramosian Sergeant: One mana and the first link: {3} and a tap put a Rebel with mana value 2 or less onto the battlefield, usually Defiant Falcon, which can find Lin Sivvi next. Cast it on turn one and search from turn three on, ideally in the opponent's end step. Four copies in most lists; as a 1/1 it dies to almost everything, so the copies matter.
- Defiant Falcon: Two mana, a 1/1 flier that finds a Rebel with mana value 3 or less for {4} and a tap: Lin Sivvi, Defiant Vanguard or one of the Gliders. Sergeant finds Falcon and Falcon finds Lin Sivvi, so one surviving Sergeant can become the whole engine.
- Whipcorder: Two mana: {W} and a tap tap target creature. Use it at the start of their combat on their best attacker, or before you attack on their best blocker; a creature that is already attacking stays in combat. It is a Rebel, so Sergeant finds it, and it can be cast face down as a morph for {3} and turned face up for {W}.
- Mother of Runes: One mana: tap to give a creature you control protection from a color until end of turn, which saves Lin Sivvi from Swords to Plowshares, Smother or Lightning Bolt, or makes an attacker unblockable by creatures of that color. She cannot tap in the turn she arrives, and she does nothing against colorless damage from Masticore, Triskelion or Cursed Scroll, against Wrath of God or against an Edict.
- Defiant Vanguard: Three mana, a 2/2 that destroys itself and every creature it blocked at end of combat: Psychatog, Goblin Piledriver, Werebear or Terravore die to it, though a trampler still deals its excess damage to you. For {5} and a tap it finds a Rebel with mana value 4 or less.
- Ramosian Sky Marshal: Five mana, a 3/3 flier and the top of the chain: {7} and a tap find a Rebel with mana value 6 or less, which means Jhovall Queen, a 4/7 with vigilance that Lightning Bolt and Smother cannot kill. Lin Sivvi finds the Queen too, for six.
- Standstill: Two mana, and in the blue build the best card against control: when an opponent casts the first spell after it, you draw three cards. Your searches, Whipcorder's tap ability and Mishra's Factory are abilities, so you keep building the board while it sits there; your own first spell gives them the three cards instead.
- Counterspell: Two mana, and the reason to hold mana up in their turn: Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Wrath of God, Armageddon, Pernicious Deed or a combo piece, and if nothing comes, the mana goes into a search at the end of their turn.
Mulligan guide
Keep
- Two or three lands with a searcher and an answer: Plains, Island, Adarkar Wastes, Ramosian Sergeant, Mother of Runes, Counterspell and Swords to Plowshares is the archetypal keep.
- Lin Sivvi with three lands and both colors, even without Sergeant: she is the engine on her own.
- Against combo and control, two counterspells and a searcher.
Ship
- Hands without a searcher: without Ramosian Sergeant, Defiant Falcon or Lin Sivvi, the deck is a pile of answers.
- One land, or six lands and one spell: every search costs mana.
- Hands with only one color source: Whipcorder needs {W}{W}, Lin Sivvi {1}{W}{W} and Counterspell {U}{U}.
Rebels mulligans for a searcher. A six-card hand with Ramosian Sergeant, a counterspell and three lands beats seven cards of answers without one.
Play tips and sequencing
- One-drop on turn one. Ramosian Sergeant or Mother of Runes; neither can tap in the turn it arrives, so the earlier the better.
- Search in their end step. A search is an ability: use the mana you held for Counterspell or Mana Leak at the end of their turn, or in response to removal aimed at the searcher, which still gets its Rebel.
- Sergeant, Falcon, Lin Sivvi. Without Lin Sivvi in hand, Sergeant for Falcon and Falcon for Lin Sivvi is the fastest way to her. Once she is out, search with her and use the other searchers when you have spare mana.
- Search for the matchup. Thermal Glider against red, Nightwind Glider against black, Defiant Vanguard against a big ground creature, Jhovall Queen as a wall or a finisher, Whipcorder against a deck with one big threat.
- Do not overextend into a sweeper. Against Wrath of God or Pernicious Deed two or three Rebels are enough; hold Lin Sivvi or a Sergeant back to rebuild, and hold a counter for the sweeper.
- Standstill when the board is even. With a searcher out, every search after Standstill is development that does not trigger it, and the first spell they cast gives you three cards; do not cast it while you still need to cast creatures.
- Mother of Runes for the engine. Keep her untapped in their turn for Lin Sivvi or the searcher they target, and give protection in response to the removal, not before.
Matchups
- Stiflenought (slightly favorable): Stifle counters a search, but it is their only answer to an ability, and the rest of their deck has little for creatures: Powder Keg and Chain of Vapor. Swords to Plowshares exiles Phyrexian Dreadnought, Whipcorder taps it every turn, and Defiant Vanguard kills it on a block, though the trample damage still gets through. Fight the counter war over Dreadnought and search with the mana you did not need. No match data.
- Sligh (slightly unfavorable): Burn takes the chain apart one link at a time: Lightning Bolt and Incinerate kill Lin Sivvi, and Mogg Fanatic, Seal of Fire and Grim Lavamancer kill a Ramosian Sergeant before it can tap. Counterspell and Mana Leak trade with burn one for one, Thermal Glider blocks their small red creatures without taking damage, and Jhovall Queen is too big for one burn spell. After boarding, Circle of Protection: Red, Absolute Law and the blue Blasts make it closer. No match data.
- Goblins (slightly unfavorable): Goblins is faster than the chain: Goblin Sharpshooter and Gempalm Incinerator pick off the 1/1 searchers, and Rishadan Port and Wasteland go after Adarkar Wastes and Mishra's Factory. Defiant Vanguard kills Goblin Piledriver on a block, Whipcorder taps it, and Counterspell stops Goblin Ringleader or Siege-Gang Commander; Swords to Plowshares goes on Goblin Lackey. After boarding, Absolute Law and Circle of Protection: Red blunt their damage. No match data.
- Enchantress (slightly unfavorable): Their engine draws more cards than you can counter, Solitary Confinement prevents all damage to them once it resolves, and Parallax Wave exiles your creatures until it leaves the battlefield. The blue build has the tools: Counterspell and Mana Leak for Confinement, Opalescence or Replenish, Meddling Mage naming Replenish, and Disenchant for the Wave or the Confinement while Sterling Grove is not out. Annul and Aura of Silence after boarding make it closer. No match data.
- Terrageddon (unfavorable): Armageddon is the worst card you can face, since every search needs mana. Counterspell and Mana Leak have to stop it, so keep them up from turn three on. Terravore and Nimble Mongoose outsize your Rebels; Swords to Plowshares answers Terravore, Defiant Vanguard kills either on a block, and Whipcorder taps Terravore but cannot target the Mongoose, which has shroud. Wasteland and Rishadan Port go after your nonbasic lands as well. No match data.
- Replenish (even): Counterspell, Mana Leak and Meddling Mage naming Replenish stop the one card that matters, and your clock is faster than their setup. Parallax Wave is the problem: it exiles your best creatures until it leaves the battlefield, so destroy it with Disenchant before it does too much. After boarding, Annul counters Opalescence, Attunement or Parallax Wave, and Tormod's Crypt in response to Replenish empties their graveyard. No match data.
- Landstill (even): Your searches, Whipcorder's tap ability and Mishra's Factory are abilities, so Standstill does not stop you from building a board, and every Rebel you put out at the end of their turn needs an answer. Their answers are Wrath of God and four Swords to Plowshares, so do not overextend: two or three Rebels, with Lin Sivvi or a Sergeant in reserve. Counter Wrath of God and Fact or Fiction, not Impulse, and tap an animated Mishra's Factory or Faerie Conclave with Whipcorder before it can attack. No match data.
- Oath of Druids (unfavorable): Your creatures turn Oath of Druids on for them: with more creatures than they have, each of their upkeeps can put Terravore onto the battlefield. Counter Oath or have Meddling Mage name it, and keep Disenchant for it if it resolves. Sphere of Resistance taxes your spells, and Wasteland, Rishadan Port, Thermokarst and Winter's Grasp go after the mana every search needs. No match data.
- Full English Breakfast (slightly unfavorable): A graveyard combo deck: Survival of the Fittest and Hermit Druid turn Volrath's Shapeshifter into a win. Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Survival and Hermit Druid, Meddling Mage can name either, and Swords to Plowshares exiles Hermit Druid on the turn it comes down. After boarding, Tormod's Crypt and Phyrexian Furnace answer the graveyard, ideally in response to the combo. No meaningful match data.
- Mono Black (even): Their removal lines up well against the chain: Smother and Snuff Out kill a searcher, Duress and Cabal Therapy take your counters and Swords to Plowshares, and Hypnotic Specter and Nantuko Shade pressure you. But the Rebels you search for never pass through your hand, Mother of Runes giving protection from black saves a searcher from Smother and Snuff Out, and Nightwind Glider has protection from black. Swords to Plowshares handles Nantuko Shade. No meaningful match data.
- Stasis (slightly unfavorable): Under Stasis players skip their untap steps, so your searches stop once your lands are tapped, and Black Vise punishes a hand full of counters. Counter Stasis or Disenchant it, keep lands untapped when it resolves, and attack before it lands; Fire // Ice kills two X/1 Rebels at once, and Daze and Thwart cost them no mana. No match data.
- Elves (slightly unfavorable): Elves goes wide faster than the chain: Gaea's Cradle and Priest of Titania power out Deranged Hermit, whose Squirrels outnumber your blockers, and Masticore picks off every X/1 you have. Counter Survival of the Fittest and the Hermit, use Swords to Plowshares on Priest of Titania or Masticore, and hold the ground with Defiant Vanguard and Jhovall Queen. No match data.
- Psychatog (even): A counter war in which your threats do not have to be cast: searches at the end of their turn dodge Counterspell and Foil. Their answers are Smother, which kills Lin Sivvi or a Sergeant, and Sickening Dreams, which kills every X/1 without protection from black. Psychatog grows from their hand and graveyard, but Swords to Plowshares exiles it, Whipcorder taps it, and Defiant Vanguard kills it on a block. No match data.
- UG Madness (even): Madness is faster and grows bigger: Arrogant Wurm, Roar of the Wurm and a Wild Mongrel that discards its way past your blockers. Defiant Vanguard kills whatever it blocks and Jhovall Queen walls the ground, but Wonder in their graveyard gives their team flying, and only Tormod's Crypt or Phyrexian Furnace answers it there. Waterfront Bouncer returns a Rebel to your hand, so the creatures you searched out have to be cast again. No match data.
- The Rock (slightly unfavorable): Pernicious Deed for three destroys Lin Sivvi, every cheap searcher and Mother of Runes together, and Smother, Diabolic Edict and Ravenous Baloth deal with single Rebels. Counter Deed when it is cast or have Meddling Mage name it, and keep Ramosian Sky Marshal or Jhovall Queen, which survive a Deed for four, to rebuild. Their discard cannot touch the Rebels you search for. No match data.
- Reanimator (slightly favorable): Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Reanimate, Exhume and Animate Dead, and Meddling Mage can name one of them. Swords to Plowshares answers Akroma, Angel of Wrath, whose protection from black and red does not stop a white spell, and Whipcorder taps her. Exhume gives you a creature back too, so a dead Lin Sivvi returns. After boarding, Tormod's Crypt in response to the reanimation spell empties their graveyard. No match data.
- Deadguy Ale (even): Their removal is good against the chain: Swords to Plowshares and Vindicate kill a searcher, Duress takes a counter and Gerrard's Verdict two cards of your choice, and Exalted Angel outraces you. But the Rebels you search for never pass through your hand, Mother of Runes giving protection from white or black stops Vindicate, and Nightwind Glider blocks Hypnotic Specter and Nantuko Shade without dying. Keep Swords to Plowshares or Whipcorder for Exalted Angel. No match data.
- Tron (even): Tron has Wrath of God, Masticore and Decree of Justice, but no fast clock. Searches at the end of their turn dodge Power Sink, Prohibit and Miscalculation, Dust Bowl destroys an Urza land, and Meddling Mage can name Wrath of God or Stroke of Genius. Masticore kills your X/1s, and Mother of Runes cannot protect them from colorless damage, so exile it with Swords to Plowshares at once. No match data.
- Clerics (even): Their fastest plan is Scion of Darkness off Dark Supplicant, as early as turn two, so keep Swords to Plowshares or Whipcorder for the 6/6 and kill Dark Supplicant on sight. Smother kills a searcher and Withered Wretch exiles the Rebel cards Lin Sivvi would put back, but Nightwind Glider and Mother of Runes giving protection from black stop their spot removal and their blockers. No match data.
- The Solution (even): Lightning Bolt and Fire // Ice kill the searchers, and Lightning Angel is a hasty 3/4 flier that Swords to Plowshares and Whipcorder answer cleanly. Their Meddling Mage can name Lin Sivvi, but the searchers still put her onto the battlefield. Counter Lightning Angel and Fact or Fiction, and bring Circle of Protection: Red, Absolute Law and Hydroblast after boarding. No match data.
- Dromar Control (even): A three-color control deck with Swords to Plowshares, Vindicate, Duress and Mana Leak; its threats are Exalted Angel and Shadowmage Infiltrator. Searches at the end of their turn dodge Mana Leak, Mother of Runes giving protection from white or black stops Vindicate, and Whipcorder and Swords to Plowshares answer Exalted Angel. Shadowmage Infiltrator has fear, so only an animated Mishra's Factory can block it. No match data.
- Aluren (slightly favorable): Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Aluren and Meddling Mage can name it; once it resolves, they can go off at instant speed, even in response to Disenchant. Their creatures are small and their only answers to yours are Man-o'-War and Chain of Vapor bouncing them, so the chain wins a long game. Keep a counter up from turn three on. No match data.
- Zombies (even): A fast black aggro deck: Carnophage, Sarcomancy and Lord of the Undead attack early, Gempalm Polluter makes you lose life, and Withered Wretch exiles the Rebel cards Lin Sivvi would put back. Nightwind Glider and a creature with protection from black from Mother of Runes block them all day, Defiant Vanguard trades with Lord of the Undead, and Swords to Plowshares keeps the Lord off the table. No match data.
- MUD (unfavorable): Winter Orb and Tangle Wire starve the searches: under Winter Orb you untap one land a turn, which leaves only small searches with Lin Sivvi. Triskelion kills three X/1s, and Mother of Runes cannot protect them from colorless damage. Counter Tinker and the lock pieces, use Swords to Plowshares on Karn, Silver Golem or Triskelion, and bring Annul, Aura of Silence and Null Rod after boarding. No match data.
- White Weenie (slightly unfavorable): White Weenie is faster, its Soltari have shadow, and Armageddon after an early board leaves your searchers without mana. Counter Armageddon above all; Defiant Vanguard and Whipcorder handle Silver Knight and Savannah Lions, and Swords to Plowshares answers Exalted Angel. Their Crusade pumps your white Rebels too. No match data.
- BW Control (slightly unfavorable): Their removal is aimed at decks like yours: Wrath of God, Swords to Plowshares and Vindicate, plus Duress and Gerrard's Verdict for your hand, and Exalted Angel and Eternal Dragon outsize every Rebel but Jhovall Queen. The Rebels you search for never pass through your hand, Mother of Runes giving protection from white or black stops Vindicate, and Counterspell or Meddling Mage stops Wrath of God. Save Swords to Plowshares and Whipcorder for the Angel and the Dragon. No meaningful match data.
- Gro-a-Tog (slightly unfavorable): Fire // Ice kills two X/1 searchers at once, Quirion Dryad grows faster than your chain, and their counters fight yours. Searches at the end of their turn dodge Counterspell, Daze and Foil, Swords to Plowshares and Whipcorder answer the Dryad and Psychatog, and Defiant Vanguard kills either on a block. Counter Armageddon; their Meddling Mage naming Lin Sivvi does not stop a search for her. No meaningful match data.
- Pit Rack (even): Their discard cannot touch the Rebels you search for, so once a searcher survives, an empty hand does not stop the engine. Smother and Funeral Charm kill a searcher, The Rack punishes an empty hand, and Bottomless Pit takes a random card from your hand in each of your upkeeps; Disenchant destroys either. Nightwind Glider and Mother of Runes giving protection from black stop Smother and Funeral Charm, though not Diabolic Edict or Cursed Scroll. No match data.
- Contamination (slightly unfavorable): Contamination stops almost all your spells, but not your searches: Ramosian Sergeant, Defiant Falcon and Lin Sivvi pay their search costs with any mana, black included. Get a searcher onto the battlefield before the lock and protect it, since their Smother and Innocent Blood are aimed at it. No match data.
- Turbo Lands (slightly unfavorable): Glacial Chasm prevents all your combat damage, and only a Dust Bowl can destroy it, so fight their spells: Counterspell and Mana Leak on Exploration, Horn of Greed and Seismic Assault, Meddling Mage naming Seismic Assault before it is cast, Disenchant on what resolves, and Standstill once their engine needs a spell. Protect your searchers from Seismic Assault with Mother of Runes, and expect Cursed Totem after boarding. No match data.
- Fluctuator (slightly favorable): Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Fluctuator and Songs of the Damned, and your searches at the end of their turn keep the counters up. Their cycling does not trigger Standstill. After boarding, Annul, Aura of Silence and Seal of Cleansing answer Fluctuator and Tormod's Crypt answers Songs; Null Rod does not, since Fluctuator's ability is not activated. No match data.
- RG Zoo (slightly unfavorable): Zoo kills the chain's 1/1s with the same cheap damage Sligh uses (Mogg Fanatic, Seal of Fire, Lava Dart and Grim Lavamancer), and Lightning Bolt kills Lin Sivvi, so keep Mother of Runes ready. Elephant tokens and a grown Quirion Dryad outsize your Rebels; Defiant Vanguard kills one on a block, and Jhovall Queen walls the ground. After boarding they bring Simoon, which deals 1 damage to each of your creatures; Circle of Protection: Red and Absolute Law stop only the red half, since the Elephants, the Dryad and Treetop Village are green. No match data.
Sideboard guide
- vs Sligh, Goblins, The Solution and Gro-a-Tog: Circle of Protection: Red, Absolute Law, Hydroblast, Blue Elemental Blast, Thermal Glider. Circle of Protection: Red and Absolute Law are each in about half of the sideboards. Absolute Law gives every creature protection from red, so Lightning Bolt, the Fire half of Fire // Ice and Grim Lavamancer cannot target your Rebels and red creatures deal them no combat damage; Circle of Protection: Red keeps red damage off you. Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast counter a burn spell, or Goblin Piledriver while it is on the stack, and destroy Sulfuric Vortex or Lightning Angel. Out: Standstill and Meddling Mage.
- vs Enchantress, Replenish, Oath of Druids, Stasis and MUD: Aura of Silence, Annul, Seal of Cleansing, Null Rod. Aura of Silence, in more than half of the sideboards, makes their artifact and enchantment spells cost two more and destroys one when you sacrifice it. Annul counters an artifact or enchantment spell for one blue mana: Oath of Druids, Stasis, Opalescence, Parallax Wave, Solitary Confinement, Winter Orb or Tangle Wire, but not Replenish, which is a sorcery. Null Rod against MUD stops Triskelion's damage ability and their artifact mana. Out: Swords to Plowshares against Enchantress, Replenish and Stasis, which give it almost no targets.
- vs Reanimator, Full English Breakfast and Replenish: Tormod's Crypt, Phyrexian Furnace. Tormod's Crypt and Phyrexian Furnace are each in about half of the sideboards. The Crypt exiles one player's whole graveyard and is best in response to Reanimate, Exhume or Replenish; the Furnace exiles the bottom card of a graveyard each turn, or one card of your choice when you sacrifice it and draw a card. Out: Shared Triumph and Defiant Vanguard.
- vs Mono Black, Pit Rack, Zombies, Clerics and Deadguy Ale: Nightwind Glider. Nightwind Glider, a main-deck one-of in about half of the lists and a sideboard card in others, has protection from black: Smother, Snuff Out and Funeral Charm cannot target it, and black creatures can neither block it nor damage it, though Diabolic Edict and Cursed Scroll can still get it. Mother of Runes does the same for one creature a turn. Light of Day, a rarely played sideboard card, stops black creatures from attacking or blocking at all. Out: Standstill and Mana Leak against Zombies and Clerics.
- vs Landstill, BW Control, Tron, Psychatog and Dromar Control: Standstill, Exalted Angel. The reference list keeps a third Standstill and an Exalted Angel for the control decks. Standstill is at its best when neither side wants to cast a spell, since your searches and Mishra's Factory do not trigger it. Exalted Angel can be cast face down for {3} and turned face up for {2}{W}{W}, which cannot be countered, into a 4/5 flier that gains you life equal to the damage it deals.
Budget and upgrades
Typical cost: $230–$900. The reference list (Gabriel Frei, first of 24 at the Liga Paulista, June 7) costs about $900 with its sideboard at the Premodern-era printings tracked here. Four Flooded Strand are about $490 of that and three Meddling Mage about $110; Dust Bowl is about $40 and the Exalted Angel in the sideboard about $30. The Rebels themselves are cheap: four Ramosian Sergeant, two Lin Sivvi, two Defiant Falcon, two Whipcorder and the three one-of Rebels cost about $8 together.
- Never cut the engine: Ramosian Sergeant, Defiant Falcon, Lin Sivvi and the Rebels they search for cost under $3 each.
- The budget build plays basic lands instead of Flooded Strand and Dust Bowl, Ramosian Lieutenant, Thermal Glider and Nightwind Glider instead of Meddling Mage, and Worship instead of Exalted Angel in the sideboard: about $230 with the same engine.
- Upgrade in this order: Meddling Mage first, the disruption the blue build misses most, then Flooded Strand, then Dust Bowl.
