Premodern archetypes that play Vindicate
- Deadguy Ale: Three mana to destroy any permanent, lands included, at sorcery speed. Protection from black or from white stops it, since Vindicate is both colors, and so do shroud and regeneration: Akroma, Angel of Wrath, a creature that Mother of Runes protects in response and the enchantments under Sterling Grove are the usual examples. With Wasteland, in four of five lists, it also attacks their mana.
- Dromar Control: In every list: destroys target permanent of any type, so it answers Oath of Druids, Cursed Scroll, The Rack or a key land, and Solitary Confinement once Sterling Grove, which gives their other enchantments shroud, is gone. It is white and black, so protection from either color stops it (Akroma, White Knight, Soltari Monk, or a creature that Mother of Runes protects), and as a sorcery it lets them activate Pernicious Deed or sacrifice Seal of Cleansing in response.
- BW Control: Three mana, destroy any permanent: Phyrexian Arena, Oath of Druids, Stasis, Solitary Confinement, an Urza land or a manland. It is black as well as white, so it cannot target a creature with protection from black, like Akroma, Soltari Monk or White Knight; Swords to Plowshares and Wrath of God still answer them.
