Premodern archetypes that play Armageddon
- Terrageddon: It destroys all lands, including manlands such as your own Treetop Village. Cast it when your board is ahead and your threats need no more mana. Cast from behind, or against a deck like Elves whose mana creatures keep working without lands, it hurts you more than them.
- White Weenie: Main deck in about six of ten lists, usually two copies. Cast it the turn your board is clearly ahead: every land is destroyed, your creatures keep attacking and they rebuild from zero. When you are behind on board it rarely helps. Against Terravore decks it only makes Terravore bigger.
- Gro-a-Tog: One in two of three main decks, more after boarding. Cast it when Quirion Dryad or Psychatog is already ahead; Gush in response saves two Islands, Mox Diamond survives it, and the opponent starts over from zero lands.
Sideboard plans with Armageddon
- Elves vs. Control and land-based decks. About a third of the sideboards have two or three Winter Orb, and the white build plays Armageddon in the main deck or sideboard. Your mana creatures untap and keep making mana under Winter Orb and after Armageddon, but Armageddon also destroys your Gaea's Cradle.
- Gro-a-Tog vs. Landstill, Psychatog, BW Control and The Rock. A second Armageddon punishes decks that need lands for counters and manlands, and Call of the Herd adds two threats that survive one sweeper.
