Premodern archetypes that play Withered Wretch
- Mono Black: A 2/2 for two in almost every main deck: for {1}, at instant speed and without tapping, it exiles a card from a graveyard, so Replenish's enchantments, Reanimator's targets and flashback cards disappear one mana at a time. It is also a Zombie for Graveborn Muse.
- Deadguy Ale: In the main deck of more than half the lists and in the sideboard of most others: a 2/2 that exiles one target card from a graveyard for {1} of any color, as often as you can pay. Against Reanimator, Replenish and Psychatog it picks the cards their plan needs, one at a time, so a Replenish for several enchantments or a graveyard full of creatures can still outrun it; against Madness it takes flashback cards and Wonder, but not a madness card, which is cast from exile.
- Clerics: In almost every main deck: a 2/2 Zombie Cleric that exiles one card from a graveyard for each {1} you pay, at instant speed. With mana open it exiles Reanimator's creature card in response to the reanimation spell or the target of a Recurring Nightmare, and it can exile a flashback card before they cast it. An opposing Wretch, in almost every Mono Black and Zombies list, can exile a cycled Scion of Darkness before your Supplicant finds it.
- Zombies: A two-mana 2/2 that exiles cards from graveyards one at a time for one mana each. Maindeck graveyard hate against Reanimator, Replenish and Psychatog, a Cleric for Rotlung, and a perfectly good attacker when there is nothing to exile. Its ability costs {1}, which any land can pay, so keep a land untapped when it matters.

- The Rock vs. Graveyard decks: Reanimator, Replenish, Full English Breakfast and Psychatog. Tormod's Crypt exiles a whole graveyard in response to reanimation; Withered Wretch and Phyrexian Furnace take one card at a time and stay useful all game.
- Deadguy Ale vs. Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Replenish, Psychatog, Madness, The Rock and Oath of Druids.
