- Stiflenought vs. Sligh, Goblins and RG Zoo. In: three Hydroblast and three Essence Flare. Hydroblast counters a red spell or destroys a red permanent for one mana, and Essence Flare kills a creature with one toughness in its controller's next upkeep, before it can attack again: Jackal Pup, Mogg Fanatic, Grim Lavamancer, Goblin Lackey, Goblin Matron. Most other lists split the Blasts between Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast.
- Stiflenought vs. Full English Breakfast, Terrageddon, Tron and Turbo Lands. Against Turbo Lands also bring three Hydroblast, which answer Seismic Assault and their Pyroblast, for Powder Keg and two Portent.
- Stiflenought vs. The Solution. In: three Hydroblast. Hydroblast counters Lightning Bolt and Fire, though not Ice, or destroys Lightning Angel, which is red, unless Mother of Runes protects it, and Stifle counters her activation.

The white-blue build has no red cards and boards Annul, Tormod's Crypt, Worship, Wrath of God, Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast instead.
- Dromar Control vs. Sligh, Goblins, RG Zoo and The Solution. Hydroblast is in about seven of ten sideboards: it counters a red spell or destroys a red permanent, such as a burn spell, a Goblin or Lightning Angel.
- Aluren vs. Sligh, Goblins and Elves. Not in the reference list, but common: Hydroblast and Blue Elemental Blast in the blue-heavy lists counter burn and kill red creatures, Engineered Plague naming Goblin or Elf in the black lists.
- Gro-a-Tog vs. Sligh and Goblins. Hydroblast, in four of five sideboards, and Blue Elemental Blast counter a red spell or destroy a red permanent for one mana: Fireblast, Sulfuric Vortex, Siege-Gang Commander, or Goblin Piledriver while it is still a spell (on the battlefield it has protection from blue).
