Premodern archetypes that play Cabal Therapy
- Full English Breakfast (4x)
- Mono Black: Name a nonland card and every copy in their hand is discarded; then flash it back by sacrificing a Ravenous Rats whose work is done, or a Withered Wretch that would die anyway. Against combo it takes every copy of a key piece at once, and three of four lists play four.
- The Rock: Once Duress has shown you their hand, it takes every copy of the card that matters, and you flash it back by sacrificing a Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots or Ravenous Rats you no longer need.
- Reanimator: A discard outlet and a disruption spell in one: target yourself and name your creature to discard every copy of it, then flash it back by sacrificing a creature, usually Putrid Imp, to take an answer from the opponent's hand.
- Clerics: For {B} you name a nonland card and they discard every copy of it, creatures included. Its flashback costs only a creature sacrifice, Zombie tokens included, and with Rotlung Reanimator out, sacrificing a Cleric to it gives you a 2/2 Zombie back.
- Aluren: In the black and Survival builds, it names the counterspell or enchantment removal before you go off. Flash it back by sacrificing a spare creature, or Academy Rector to put Aluren onto the battlefield.
- Zombies: Name the card, see the hand, take every copy, then flash it back by sacrificing a Zombie you can recur or replace. After Duress you name with certainty; blind, you name the card that beats you: Pernicious Deed, Wrath of God, Replenish, Oath of Druids, Phyrexian Dreadnought.
- Pit Rack: Name a nonland card, and they discard every copy in their hand. Flash it back by sacrificing Ravenous Rats or a Skittering Skirge whose job is done; name what Duress or the first Therapy showed you.
- Contamination: One mana: name a nonland card, and they discard every copy in their hand; flash it back by sacrificing Nether Spirit or a Zombie token. With Duress, it takes the counterspell or the Seal of Cleansing that would stop Contamination.
Sideboard plans with Cabal Therapy
- Aluren vs. Stiflenought, Landstill, Psychatog, Tron, The Solution, Dromar Control and Stasis. The Survival lists add a fourth Cabal Therapy, and some blue lists Show and Tell.
- Aluren vs. Mono Black, The Rock, Deadguy Ale, Clerics and Zombies. Compost, in half the sideboards, draws a card whenever a black card hits their graveyard, from their discard spells to their dead creatures, and the fourth Cabal Therapy fights their discard.
- BW Control vs. Landstill, Psychatog, Dromar Control, Mono Black and Deadguy Ale. Phyrexian Arena draws an extra card every turn, Cabal Therapy names Counterspell, Standstill or Hypnotic Specter, and Spiritual Focus gains 2 life and draws a card whenever their Duress, Gerrard's Verdict or Hypnotic Specter makes you discard.
