Premodern archetypes that play Phyrexian Furnace
- Landstill: One or two copies in about three of four main decks. Pay {1} and sacrifice it to exile one card from any graveyard and draw a card, so it replaces itself; or tap it each turn to exile the bottom card of a player's graveyard. It exiles the reanimation target, Squee or a flashback card before it matters, and every card it takes is one fewer for Psychatog or Grim Lavamancer to exile.

Sideboard plans with Phyrexian Furnace
- Landstill vs. Graveyard decks: Reanimator, Replenish, Psychatog and Fluctuator. Another Phyrexian Furnace takes one card at a time and replaces itself.
- The Rock vs. Graveyard decks: Reanimator, Replenish, Full English Breakfast and Psychatog. Tormod's Crypt exiles a whole graveyard in response to reanimation; Withered Wretch and Phyrexian Furnace take one card at a time and stay useful all game.
- Deadguy Ale vs. Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Replenish, Psychatog, Madness, The Rock and Oath of Druids. Tormod's Crypt is in about four of ten sideboards since April and Phyrexian Furnace in about three.
- Tron vs. Graveyard decks: Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Replenish and Fluctuator. Phyrexian Furnace, in a few lists, exiles one card at a time.
- The Solution vs. BW Control and The Rock. Against both, in: both Seal of Cleansing and both Phyrexian Furnace; out: two Lightning Bolt and two Portent, since Exalted Angel, Eternal Dragon and most of The Rock's creatures survive a Bolt. Phyrexian Furnace exiles Eternal Dragon from their graveyard before it returns, or the creature that Recurring Nightmare targets.
- The Solution vs. Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Clerics and Contamination. Against Reanimator, in: all three Tormod's Crypt and both Phyrexian Furnace; out: three Lightning Bolt, which cannot target Akroma, and two Portent.
- Dromar Control vs. Reanimator, Replenish, Full English Breakfast, Fluctuator and other graveyard decks. Tormod's Crypt costs no mana and exiles a player's whole graveyard at once; Phyrexian Furnace exiles one card at a time, or a chosen card when you sacrifice it, and then draws a card.
- MUD vs. Stiflenought, Landstill, Psychatog, Tron, The Solution and Dromar Control. Add two Shattering Pulse against Stiflenought for Dreadnought and Powder Keg, one against Landstill, Phyrexian Furnace against Psychatog, and two Pyroclasm against The Solution and Dromar.
- MUD vs. Enchantress, Replenish, Oath of Druids, The Rock and Aluren. Add Phyrexian Furnace against Replenish for Skullcap, and against The Rock, where Sphere of Resistance and Skullcap go instead of Triskelion.
- MUD vs. Elves, Mono Black, Terrageddon, Clerics, Zombies and UG Madness.
- MUD vs. Reanimator and graveyard decks.
- BW Control vs. Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Psychatog, UG Madness and Replenish. A second Phyrexian Furnace joins the one in the main deck.
- Rebels vs. Reanimator, Full English Breakfast and Replenish. Tormod's Crypt and Phyrexian Furnace are each in about half of the sideboards.
- Contamination vs. Reanimator, Full English Breakfast, Replenish and Psychatog. Tormod's Crypt exiles one player's graveyard at instant speed, and the extra Phyrexian Furnaces exile the one card that matters.
