Premodern archetypes that play Winter Orb
- MUD: While it is untapped, players untap only one land. It holds the opponent to one or two spells a turn and does not touch artifact mana. It turns off while tapped or phased out, so an opposing Ice or Icy Manipulator on it, or Vision Charm phasing it out, gives them a full untap. Never tap your own Orb to Tangle Wire.
Sideboard plans with Winter Orb
- Elves vs. Control and land-based decks. About a third of the sideboards have two or three Winter Orb, and the white build plays Armageddon in the main deck or sideboard. Your mana creatures untap and keep making mana under Winter Orb and after Armageddon, but Armageddon also destroys your Gaea's Cradle.
- White Weenie vs. Landstill, Tron, BW Control, Dromar Control and The Solution. Against Landstill and Tron also bring Cursed Scroll and Winter Orb; out: Worship, Glorious Anthem and two Silver Knight. Winter Orb lets each player untap only one land, which hurts a deck of counterspells more than your one- and two-drops, and Spiritual Focus gains you 2 life and draws a card for each card their Duress or Gerrard's Verdict makes you discard.
- White Weenie vs. Psychatog and Gro-a-Tog. In: both Tormod's Crypt and the second Cursed Scroll, plus Winter Orb against Psychatog or Absolute Law against Gro-a-Tog.
