Premodern archetypes that play Counterspell
- Stiflenought: Counters any spell for two mana. The free spells do the early work, and Counterspell stops removal and key spells once the game goes longer.
- Landstill: Four copies in almost every list, usually with three Mana Leak and, in about two of three lists, one or two Prohibit, for seven to nine counterspells. Mana Leak gets worse once the opponent can pay {3}; Prohibit counters a spell with mana value 2 or less, or 4 or less if you pay {2} more for its kicker.
- Stasis (4x)
- Psychatog: Four copies in every blue-black list: two mana, any spell. Save it for the cards that beat you, such as Survival of the Fittest, Opalescence, Replenish, Stasis or the removal spell aimed at Psychatog.
- The Solution (2x)
- Gro-a-Tog: In every list, almost always four. With Daze and, in two of three lists, Foil, it protects Quirion Dryad from sweepers and stops the combo decks before they start.
- Rebels: Two mana, and the reason to hold mana up in their turn: Counterspell and Mana Leak stop Wrath of God, Armageddon, Pernicious Deed or a combo piece, and if nothing comes, the mana goes into a search at the end of their turn.
