Premodern archetypes that play Dark Ritual
- Mono Black: Three mana for one card: a turn-one Hypnotic Specter, a turn-one Ravenous Rats plus Duress, a turn-two Graveborn Muse, or two more Nantuko Shade activations than the Swamp alone. It costs a card, so cast it when the extra mana puts a threat or a discard spell on the table early.
- Reanimator (4x)
- Deadguy Ale (4x)
- Clerics: In every list. Swamp, Dark Ritual and two Priest of Gix leave {B}{B}{B} after the second Priest, enough for Dark Supplicant and Withered Wretch, so four Clerics can be on the battlefield on turn one and Supplicant can be activated on turn two.
