Painters: Spicy Brew

UBR Distorting Lens Suicide Black

The name winks at Painter's Servant, a card Premodern never gets to play, and the deck rebuilds that idea out of two cards that were legal all along. Distorting Lens taps to make any permanent the colour of your choice until end of turn, and Vodalian Mystic does the same to any instant or sorcery on the stack. Around those two painters sit eight one-mana Blasts. Pyroblast and Hydroblast only check the colour when they resolve, so you can point one at anything and paint the target in response; Red Elemental Blast and Blue Elemental Blast need a blue or red target up front, so with those you paint first and cast second. Either way, one mana destroys a Phyrexian Dreadnought, an Exalted Angel, a Survival of the Fittest or a Mishra's Factory, and the Mystic lets the same mana counter a Cabal Therapy, an Armageddon or a Replenish. Against real blue and red decks the Blasts are simply good cards, and the painters are free to point elsewhere.

Dystopia is the second engine. Under current Oracle wording every player sacrifices a green or white permanent of their choice at the beginning of their upkeep, and this deck controls no green or white permanents, so only the opponent pays. Against Enchantress, Elves, The Rock or Terrageddon that is a one-sided Smokestack for three mana. Against everyone else the Lens fires during their upkeep with the trigger on the stack and turns their best permanent green: if it is the only green or white thing they control, it is the thing they lose. The cumulative upkeep costs one life per age counter, which is a clock on you as much as on them, and the deck is built to finish before that matters.

The rest is a suicide-black shell. Dark Ritual puts a turn-one Hypnotic Specter or Phyrexian Negator on the table, four Duress clear the way, and a 5/5 trampler ends the game in three swings while the Blasts remove whatever tries to block it. With so many one-mana instants there is always mana spare for the painters. Ancestral Knowledge looks at the top ten cards, exiles the ones the matchup does not need and stacks the rest, so the next draws are exactly the Blast or Lens the board asks for; Lim-Dûl's Vault does the same at instant speed for a life per five cards. Underground River, Shivan Reef, City of Brass, Reflecting Pool, the fetchlands and a single Crosis's Catacombs carry the two splashes on a black core.

The sideboard is a hate deck in miniature. Chill and Gloom tax red and white decks, Engineered Plague answers Goblins and Elves, Perish is for green, Tormod's Crypt for Reanimator and Cephalid Breakfast, and Plaguebearer is a repeatable kill on nonblack creatures, with the Lens on hand to make a black creature nonblack for it. This exact 75 went 5-0 in the MTGO Premodern League of 26 August 2026, piloted by DB_romariovidal.

The Format

What is Premodern?

Premodern is a Magic: The Gathering format played with cards from Fourth Edition through Scourge (1995–2003), the game's golden era. It captures the feel of early competitive Magic: iconic old-border cards, meaningful decisions and a rich, interactive metagame, free of the power creep of later sets.

1995 — 2003

How it plays

Premodern is an eternal, non-rotating format. Games reward tight play, deckbuilding skill and knowledge of the metagame rather than raw speed. Combo, control, aggro and midrange all have a home, from Goblins and Stiflenought to Landstill, Replenish and The Rock.
