Bloody Clerics: Spicy Brew

BR Cleric Sacrifice Combo

Bloody Clerics is the black Clerics deck with a red splash for Goblin Bombardment and Terminate, and Bombardment changes how it wins. Rotlung Reanimator makes a 2/2 Zombie whenever it or another Cleric dies, and Bombardment sacrifices any creature for no mana to deal 1 damage to any target. With both on the table every Cleric is worth 2 damage: 1 when it goes into Bombardment and 1 more when the Zombie it leaves behind follows. Cabal Archon does even better. For B it sacrifices a Cleric, the opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2, and the Zombie that comes out still goes into Bombardment, so for one black mana a Cleric is worth 3 points instead of 2. The Deadapult brew uses the same Rotlung trick, but Deadapult takes only Zombies and wants R for each one, even though it deals 2 per Zombie; Bombardment deals only 1, but it takes any creature and costs nothing to use.

Say Bombardment, Rotlung, Archon, Priest of Gix and Dark Supplicant are out, three Swamps are untapped and the opponent is at 20. Archon sacrifices Priest, then Supplicant, then itself, and each Zombie goes into Bombardment right after: that's 9, 6 of it life loss from Archon. Bombardment then eats Rotlung, which triggers on its own death, for 2 more. For three mana the opponent loses 11 life and you gain 6. With five mana on the next turn, Patriarch's Bidding naming Cleric brings all four back, Priest of Gix adds BBB when it enters, and the same sequence takes another 11. The catch is that the opponent names a creature type too, and each player gets back every creature card of both types from their own graveyard, so against Goblins or Elves the Bidding also returns their army.

Underneath it's still the Clerics deck from our guide. Dark Supplicant taps and sacrifices three Clerics, and it can count itself, to put Scion of Darkness, a 6/6 trampler that costs 8, onto the battlefield from your graveyard, hand or library; with Rotlung out the three Clerics leave three Zombies behind. Priest of Gix pays for itself with the BBB it adds, and Dark Ritual gets a Cleric down on turn one. Cabal Therapy's flashback sacrifices a creature as well, and if that creature is a Cleric, Rotlung makes a Zombie for it. Shepherd of Rot taps to make each player, you included, lose 1 life for every Zombie on the battlefield, and Rotlung, Withered Wretch, the Shepherd and every Zombie token count. Four Terminate and two Diabolic Edict handle creatures, Rishadan Port taps down a land in the opponent's upkeep, and two Phyrexian Arena keep the cards coming.

The sideboard has four Duress, three Engineered Plague, two Infest, two Hecatomb, two Haunting Echoes and two Backlash. Hecatomb asks you to sacrifice four creatures when it enters, which Rotlung turns into Zombies if they're Clerics, and after that every untapped Swamp can tap for 1 damage. Infest kills your own Clerics along with the opponent's small creatures, but the Zombies Rotlung makes for the dead Clerics arrive after Infest has resolved and survive. Matheus Wink won the 14-player Liga Feijoada 2026 #10 in Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil on 3 October 2026 with this 75 and called it BR Clerics. Of the 58 Clerics lists on mtgtop8 from the last twelve months, his is the only one with Goblin Bombardment, Patriarch's Bidding or Terminate.

The Format

What is Premodern?

Premodern is a Magic: The Gathering format played with cards from Fourth Edition through Scourge (1995–2003), the game's golden era. It captures the feel of early competitive Magic: iconic old-border cards, meaningful decisions and a rich, interactive metagame, free of the power creep of later sets.

1995 — 2003

How it plays

Premodern is an eternal, non-rotating format. Games reward tight play, deckbuilding skill and knowledge of the metagame rather than raw speed. Combo, control, aggro and midrange all have a home, from Goblins and Stiflenought to Landstill, Replenish and The Rock.
