Coffers Control: Spicy Brew

Mono-Black Corrupt Control

Coffers Control is a mono-black control deck that wins through its Swamps. Corrupt deals damage equal to the number of Swamps you control and gains you that much life, Cabal Coffers turns two mana and a tap into one black mana for every Swamp, and Drain Life converts all of that black mana into damage and life. Fifteen Swamps and two Thawing Glaciers keep the count climbing: Glaciers puts a basic Swamp onto the battlefield every other turn and returns to your hand, so the land drops keep coming after the hand runs out of lands. Bösium Strip costs three mana and a tap to let you cast the instant or sorcery on top of your graveyard that turn, paying its cost again, so a Corrupt or a Drain Life hits twice, and a Corrupt the opponent countered lands in your graveyard and can come back through the Strip. A spell cast this way is exiled afterwards.

The usual Premodern Mono Black Control plays Nevinyrral's Disk, Phyrexian Arena and Mutilate: at least 28 of the 33 Mono Black Control lists with Cabal Coffers on mtgtop8 since 2021 run each of them. This list plays none of them. Four Powder Keg are the sweeper instead: in each of your upkeeps you may put a fuse counter on the Keg, and when you sacrifice it, it destroys every artifact and creature with mana value equal to the counters. Protection from a color does not stop it, because the Keg is colorless and targets nothing. Ten discard spells take the opponent's hand apart: Duress and Cabal Therapy early, Stupor for two cards, one of them at random, and Mind Sludge late for one card per Swamp you control. The only creature is a single Nether Spirit. It returns from the graveyard at the beginning of your upkeep if it is the only creature card there, which in a deck without other creatures holds until it gets exiled, so it is the creature you sacrifice to Innocent Blood or to Cabal Therapy's flashback, and it comes back.

Four Wasteland and a Dust Bowl destroy nonbasic lands such as the Urza lands, Rishadan Port, Mishra's Factory or an opposing Cabal Coffers, while this deck's own mana is mostly basic Swamps. Diabolic Tutor finds the missing Cabal Coffers, a Corrupt or Haunting Echoes, which late in the game exiles the opponent's graveyard, basic lands aside, along with every copy of those cards left in their library. Skeletal Scrying draws X cards for X life at instant speed by exiling X cards from your graveyard, and Corrupt and Drain Life pay the life back; choose the exiled cards with care, because Nether Spirit and the Strip both use the graveyard. Two Phyrexian Furnace in the main deck slow down Reanimator, Psychatog and Threshold and can be sacrificed to exile one card and draw another.

Without Nevinyrral's Disk this list can't remove an enchantment once it has resolved, and Circle of Protection: Black prevents the damage of Corrupt and Drain Life, so discard has to catch it in hand. From the sideboard, Gloom makes every white spell cost three more and every activation of Circle of Protection: Black cost three more. Dystopia makes green and white decks sacrifice a permanent in each of their upkeeps while this deck has none to lose, Engineered Plague shrinks Goblins, Elves or Clerics, and Infest, Diabolic Edict and a second Smother handle creatures, the Edict even through shroud and protection. Tormod's Crypt, a third Furnace and a second Haunting Echoes come in against graveyard decks. Coffers Control is a fringe deck: of those 33 mtgtop8 finishes, four are from 2026, the best a second place of 22 at an FNM at Magic Lair in Argentina in July and a Top 4 of 33 at the Draft Punk Tourney in Volgograd in August. On YouTube, Crucible of Words has taken Thawing Glaciers versions, called Corrupting Glaciers, through several MTGO leagues since October 2025. Four Powder Keg and four Wasteland make up nearly half of what the list costs.

The Format

What is Premodern?

Premodern is a Magic: The Gathering format played with cards from Fourth Edition through Scourge (1995–2003), the game's golden era. It captures the feel of early competitive Magic: iconic old-border cards, meaningful decisions and a rich, interactive metagame, free of the power creep of later sets.

1995 — 2003

How it plays

Premodern is an eternal, non-rotating format. Games reward tight play, deckbuilding skill and knowledge of the metagame rather than raw speed. Combo, control, aggro and midrange all have a home, from Goblins and Stiflenought to Landstill, Replenish and The Rock.
