Snap Cradle Pop: Spicy Brew

UG Gaea's Cradle Untap Combo

Twenty-four creatures that do almost nothing on their own, and a land that counts them. Gaea's Cradle taps for one green mana per creature, and every other card in the deck either adds a creature or untaps the Cradle. Snap returns a creature to its owner's hand and untaps two lands, Cloud of Faeries untaps two lands when it enters, and Crop Rotation sacrifices a tapped land and puts a fresh, untapped Cradle onto the battlefield. With four creatures out the arithmetic looks like this: tap Cradle and a Yavimaya Coast for five, Snap your own Cloud of Faeries and untap both lands, tap them again, recast the Cloud, which untaps them once more, and tap them a third time. Five mana have become ten, and the Cloud is back on the battlefield. Birds of Paradise, Llanowar Elves and Wall of Blossoms are there to make the first Cradle big enough.

The creatures that come back to hand are the point, because they pay you again. Wall of Blossoms and Multani's Acolyte draw a card every time they enter. Wirewood Symbiote returns an Elf to hand to untap a creature once a turn, so it turns a used Acolyte into another card and an exhausted Llanowar Elves into another mana. Deranged Hermit makes four Squirrels that are 2/2 while the Hermit stays, and every Squirrel is one more green mana from the Cradle. Natural Order sacrifices a Squirrel or an Elf to put the Hermit onto the battlefield, and Living Wish fetches any creature or land from the sideboard, from a second Cradle to the missing Cloud of Faeries.

A long turn ends one of three ways. Temporal Fissure has storm: every spell cast before it that turn adds a copy, so after a long chain it returns the opponent's lands and creatures to hand, and spare copies send your own Clouds, Walls and Hermits back for another lap. Stroke of Genius with a huge X can draw your whole deck, or target the opponent for more cards than their library holds. And when neither is needed, the Squirrels simply attack. The Pop in the name is Barrin, Master Wizard: for two mana and a sacrificed Squirrel he returns Cloud of Faeries or Deranged Hermit to hand, which with a big board makes more mana and more Squirrels than it costs, but in practice the combo turn is usually over long before Barrin is needed.

The sideboard is built around Living Wish: Barrin, Masticore against small creatures, Nantuko Vigilante as a morph that destroys an artifact or enchantment, Spike Feeder against burn, plus a Hermit, a Cloud, a Symbiote and a Cradle. Carpet of Flowers makes mana from blue opponents' Islands, Naturalize answers Tangle Wire and Null Rod, and there is an extra Temporal Fissure. Jelle Lansdaal started building the deck in summer 2025 around Living Wish, Cloud of Faeries, Deranged Hermit and Gaea's Cradle, inspired by a historical deck by Pat Chapin, and won the third season of the Spice Paradise league with it. Stefan Böswarth won the 34-player Three For One Monthly in Vienna on 10 March 2026 with this exact 75. The more common build runs four Snap and four Stroke of Genius without Living Wish.

The Format

What is Premodern?

Premodern is a Magic: The Gathering format played with cards from Fourth Edition through Scourge (1995–2003), the game's golden era. It captures the feel of early competitive Magic: iconic old-border cards, meaningful decisions and a rich, interactive metagame, free of the power creep of later sets.

1995 — 2003

How it plays

Premodern is an eternal, non-rotating format. Games reward tight play, deckbuilding skill and knowledge of the metagame rather than raw speed. Combo, control, aggro and midrange all have a home, from Goblins and Stiflenought to Landstill, Replenish and The Rock.
