4c Blessing Control: Spicy Brew

UWRG Gaea's Blessing Draw-Go

Thirty instants, three sorceries, four cantrip artifacts and not a single creature card. The only threats are three Mishra's Factory, and the deck is happy never to animate them, because its real win condition is that the opponent runs out of cards first. Gaea's Blessing makes sure you never do. Cast for two mana it shuffles up to three cards from a graveyard back into that library and draws a card, so the Counterspells and Swords you traded away in the early turns come back for the late ones; pointed at the opponent it shuffles away Reanimator targets, flashback and threshold instead. And whenever a Blessing goes from your library into your graveyard, it shuffles the whole graveyard back in. That is why Fact or Fiction costs this deck nothing: bin the pile with the Blessing in it and the pile comes back. It is also why Cephalid Breakfast, Brain Freeze and your own Gush habit cannot deck you. Two players trading one for one, one of whom has an infinite library, ends only one way.

The mana is the other joke. Eleven Island, four Flooded Strand, two Plains and one each of Forest, Mountain and Rith's Grove, and on top of that four Chromatic Sphere, which sacrifice for one mana of any colour and draw a card. That is how a blue deck casts Swords to Plowshares, Fire // Ice, Prophetic Bolt, Renewed Faith, Disenchant and a green sorcery without ever stumbling on Islands, and the Islands are the point: they turn Foil into a free counterspell and Gush into a free draw-two. Gush also puts two Islands back in hand, so the land drops never stop.

In play it is draw-go of the oldest school. Counterspell and Foil answer the spell that matters, Impulse and Fact or Fiction dig, Ice taps a land on their upkeep and draws, Fire and Lightning Bolt clean up Goblins and Elves, Prophetic Bolt kills an Exalted Angel or a Psychatog and looks at four cards while it does. Renewed Faith cycles when life does not matter and gains six when it does. Once the opponent's hand is empty a Factory attacks for two a turn, a second Factory pumps it, and if they find one more threat there are four Swords behind it, and the Blessings bring those back too.

The sideboard supplies what the main deck refuses to run. Meddling Mage names the combo card, Legacy's Allure sits for a few upkeeps and then steals the one creature they resolved, Wrath of God resets a board that got past the counters, and Lightning Angel, a 3/4 flier with vigilance and haste, ends control mirrors that the Factories cannot. Abeyance shuts off a combo turn and cantrips, Tranquil Domain sweeps Enchantress and Replenish, and Scour exiles Oath of Druids together with every other copy from their graveyard, hand and library. This exact 75 finished 5th of 50 at the Midwest Championship Open at CubeCon in Madison, Wisconsin on 30 August 2026, piloted by Sam Black.

The Format

What is Premodern?

Premodern is a Magic: The Gathering format played with cards from Fourth Edition through Scourge (1995–2003), the game's golden era. It captures the feel of early competitive Magic: iconic old-border cards, meaningful decisions and a rich, interactive metagame, free of the power creep of later sets.

1995 — 2003

How it plays

Premodern is an eternal, non-rotating format. Games reward tight play, deckbuilding skill and knowledge of the metagame rather than raw speed. Combo, control, aggro and midrange all have a home, from Goblins and Stiflenought to Landstill, Replenish and The Rock.
