Premodern archetypes that play Phyrexian Devourer
- Full English Breakfast: As Shapeshifter's form it exiles cards from your library for +1/+1 counters equal to their mana value, at no mana. The sacrifice trigger at power 7 is a state trigger and does not trigger again while it waits on the stack, which is what lets the counters pile up.
- MUD: With Altar of Dementia it is a mill kill: exile cards from your library to grow it, keep going while its sacrifice trigger waits on the stack, then sacrifice it to Altar for its full power. The cost is your own library: with this list, milling a 40-card library exiles about 20 of your own cards, more on a run of lands, so count both libraries first.
